VIN Tag removal

VIN Tag removal - 08/29/08 12:12 AM

I have removed the dash and dash pad from my 70 Challenger getting ready to ship / deliver to UR in El Paso.
What is the easiest way to romove the rivets from the dash pad frame / VIN tag? I started to drill the VIN tag side, but noticed it may be easier to grind off the back of the rivet?
I have drilled out many rivets over the years.......I just do not want to damage anything!

Why do you want to remove it?

uh, because if he's sending it out for resto, he won't get the tag back.

I ground the back side off, You don't want to damage the 'rosettes' if you're going to reuse.
I glued mine back on. Looks perfect, functions perfect, good enough for me.

Perfect! Thanks, I will go grind them off from the back.

(I do not have another good answer as to why I must remove the tag--Arizona is picky about dash VIN tag # matching the VIN tag # on the drivers door or they will not 'verify' the odometer reading- so I am safekeeping the tag while it goes to get resto'ed)

I just removed the tag. I ground the backs of the rivets flush and then drilled the back (slightly) with a 1/4" bit to free them (they are countersunk).
Thanks for the info!
