1970 shaker hood? - 10/19/10 10:15 PM

In 1970 did shaker hoods come on six packs or just 4 barrels? Did Dodge offer a shaker hood in 1970?

Oh what car? Challenger? Cuda? They came on Hemi's, 440's, 383's and 340's. Optional on both Cuda and Challenger except for Hemi Cuda's, which got them stock.

it does not matter the engine, I was just wondering in general if the 70 Challenger had a shaker hood. I knew the 426 was standard but was wondering if it came as an option with the 440, 383 and again I knew it was an optiion with the 340. Does it have to be a four barrel or can it also be a six pack to have the shaker air cleaner?

The shaker was only standard on Hemi Cuda's. Hemi Challengers they were optional.

Here are the cars that could have a shaker.

440 6-bbl
383 4-bbl
340 4-bbl

In 1970, as already mentioned, the Hemicudas got shakers STANDARD equipment. The shaker was OPTIONAL on 440-6 Cudas though at extra cost. SOME 340 & 383 Cudas in 1970 did get the shaker hoods, but they were probably flukes that happened by someone on the inside pulling some strings. THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE AVAILABLE ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN A HEMI OR A 440-6.

On the '70 Challengers (as already mentioned), the shaker hood was OPTIONAL on Hemis & 440-6's. HOWEVER, I remember talking with people over the years that claimed they ordered a shaker setup on 440-6 Challengers, & the cars came in with the std. dual scoop hood & a letter from the factory stating that "Due to production problems, the shaker hood is not available at this time."

In 1971, the shaker setup became a regular option on all Cudas & Challenger R/T's. However, it was standard/mandatory on the Hemicudas. **Could a shaker be ordered on a 1971 non-R/T Challenger or a Barracuda - with say a 340 or 383? That would be interesting to know. I've never seen or heard of one!

I have the bulletin from Chry that said Shaker is now an option on 340,383and 440 4bbl cars from March 1970 and I have 2 1970 340 Shaker cudas.
I did order a 70 Challenger R/T 440-6 super trac pkg with the shaker, but it did not come on it and no letter.

Dan those figures for 1970 R/Ts Challengers "164" shaker hoods, are those figures from the USA sales figures. I ask this because I am trying to get a friend to pull the trigger on a 1970 Challenger 440-6 auto Dana that came with a shaker hood. May 1970 built car. This just might make him dig into his pockets.

Since 1984 ive been sitting on a 70 plum crazy 340 4 speed shaker car and now maybe I understand the interest over the years.

I dont have the fender tag here, its on the car but I do have the build sheet I could post, but dont really care to have the VIN floating around.

I dont understand all the stuff on a older buildsheet/fender tags but it clearly shows the N96 on both.

I was told possibly 5-6 of them but I never really bought into it as I know of two other 340 challengers with shakers. So I dont see the big deal in it.
