'67 B-body, wheel and tire combo?

'67 B-body, wheel and tire combo? - 10/15/10 07:07 AM

Hi All,
Time for some new wheels and tires for the car.
I'd really like to put on some 275/60/15 drag radials. I've read of people having success with this without having to minitub, but only with the right rims/backspacing.
Will a 15x8 with 4.5" backspace get a 275/60/15 drag radial under the car?
If 275/60/15 is too tough, what would be the next best size?

I did look at all this a few years ago, and worked out exactly what I wanted, but can neither remember what was decided nor find record of it.

And what about the front wheels, what would be well matched rim and tyre sizes?
Cheers!

I ran 275/60/15's on a 67 GTX and 67 coronet. I used 15x7's w/ 4.5 BS. If you go 8 you might need more backspace. I also rolled up the inner wheel lip on mine.

I have 275/60 drag radials on 15x7 rims with 4 3/8" BS on my 67. No wheel well mods. I know not ideal size rim, but it works. My fronts are 15x5.5 with 205/75's.

275 will likely fit, if on a 15x7 rim. The 8" rim might let the section width get into the wheel lip ??. If you're just talking drag strip, I'd feel safe going that route. IF the car is going to be street driven (over bumps and around corners at speed), 275's might rub. Your ride ht. will come into play here as well. MT makes the ET drag radial in a 255. That will fit no problems for sure.

I love your look there Jeff!

have 275 drag radials on 8 in with 4.5 backspace but had to roll lip and straighten rib in outer wheelhouse.

I think the 255's are the right choice for these cars. Hard to argue with Jeffs look, though.

I will admit 255's are alot easier to change than 275's.

I used a 275/60/15 in the back on a 15x7 and a 215/75/15 up front on a 15x6.

the 255's would be a much easier (and headache free) option.
With the 505" up front, this car will see some more strip time.
I'm wondering how much traction I'd be giving up with 255's over 275's?
Mickey Thompson website says 0.5" for tread width?

Jeff, any idea what the backspacing is on those front rims?

Considering there are guys out there going Hella-fast on the 275's, 255's should be sufficient for just about any street/strip car out there if the suspension is sorted out at all. Unless you think you're going to be into the 9's, I'm guessing the 255's are plenty. But who am I

Anyone currently running 275s on one of these cars?
If so, any chance of quickly measuring how much room there is behind the wheel?
Cheers!

From my most inward portion of my sidewall to the outermost portion of my inner-fenderwell I have ~1 3/8" clearance. This is at the center of my inner fenderwell. Now my innermost "bulge" of sidewall is ~1-2" below the inner fenderwell. Only goes on the same level with extreme uphill turns...I.E. my driveway.

Thanks for that Jeff.
So, if I understand what you're saying, is that if you ran an extra 1/2" of backspace, you'd still have 7/8" clearance at the most extreme circumstances?

Cheers!

Yes...(I think that's what I'm saying, just kidding). Not sure what my front 15x5.5 BS is though.

One last thing to consider: If the car does hook good with the 255's, Its likely that it will be a hair faster in 60' than it will on 275's, as the slightly smaller diameter effectivly lowers your gearing just a bit.

275s on 15X7s an 215X70s on 15X6.

Hemi Ram,
That car looks really sharp with those wheels!
Any wheel well mods to the rear?
And do you happen to know what the backspacing is on the rims?
Cheers!
