07 ram v6 ETC fault? - 10/13/10 02:17 PM

My buddies 07 Ram 1500 with the V6 just started running bad out of the blue? He was about 2 miles from home It was running fine then all of a sudden started coughing ,spitting and sputtering, he depressed the clutch and it seemed to smooth out but in gear it didn't run right! when it happened the ETC light began flashing(electronic throttle control),he made it into the parking lot and let it idle , sounded like it was missing real bad ( through the exaust) Anyway he shut it off then restarted it and the problem disappeared? You guys know of any similar problems or have any advise on what to look for?

Thanks in advance!

Disconnect battery. Take the throttle body off, and if you find the back side of it covered in grimy crud, it can probably be fixed at home.

Clean the throttle body using brakekleen, a toothbrush, paper towels and gentle compressed air (maybe 25 psi, not 100). When cleaning, take care to not get any brakekleen inside the electronic throttle mechanism...it is "sealed", but be careful anyway.

9 times out of 10 that fixes it. Put it back on, reconnect the battery and fire it up. A new pcv valve and
clean-out of the breather hose also helps.

All the newer breather systems dump blowby and oil vapor directly into the intake at WOT, which causes the problem.
