I would find what it wants for initial w the vac gauge method then shorten the slots to get 36-38 total then play w the springs & get just a heavy enough spring combo to keep it just under the pinging point at WOT up thru the gears on your hottest/driest day. I would (highly) suggest doing these in order and slow timing may be why it is not up to par in addition to the CR possibly being too low (what is the cranking compression). Good luck w it & keep in mind that any ping you can HEAR is way too much.
No vacumn advance. Not a real stong engine. So what should the total advance be set at?
