need help quick 2006 ram front hub removal - 10/07/10 07:18 PM

How doe back you get the front hubsealed bearing assembly off. I took off the rotor and the three bolts off the back of knucle that hold the hub on. The hub seems to be frozen to the knuckle. I've tapped on it with a hammer and it doesen't want to move. Should I just beat it off with a BFH or is there some type of puller I should be using

Sounds like you need a puller:

Hub installation is a degree more difficult than changing a tire on most vehicles.
1. Jack the vehicle up and support with proper jack stands.
2. Have a helper hold the brake pedal while you loosen the Axle Shaft Nut. This usually requires a large socket (30mm or larger) and impact wrench.
3. Remove the brake caliper and brake rotor. Use string or a plastic tie to hang the caliper up and out of the way.
4. Unplug ABS sensor (if applicable)
5. Unbolt the hub flange. The hub may come free from the axle shaft easily, if not, use a gear puller or similar tool that pulls on the hub while pushing on the axle shaft. DO NOT try to drive the axle out with a hammer, this could ruin your axle CV joints.

it would be nice if it were that easy , my 2000 2500 took 20,000 psi on a hyd presss to get the hub out , that was after i sawed off the ball joints so I could get the steering knuckle into the press .

Use a BFH and some heat on the knuckle .

The 4 bolt HD ones are a PITA. I ended up working an air chisel between the two pieces on the first one and forcing it apart with that....

on the other side the hub came right off and had traces of anti seize on it (the other side had apparently been done before!).

I have never done the light duty 3 bolt ones but have heard they are no picnic either,,,none of them are when they rust at all.

They arent bad.Even the crusty ones come out fairly easy.I unbolt them then use a hammer on the hub part.If that dosent work i Have a fairly thin air chisel and a good air hammer.I get them along a flat where they go into the knuckle and get them to spin a bit. When I get a gap I use my air chisel to get them out. Then clean the knucle real good and use some antisieze before install.Rocky

The removal of these are the same back to 2003. They can really suck to do if its your first time. Seeing that you have the rotor off, remove the axle nut 1 11/16 socket. Loosen the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle run them out all but about 5-6 threds. Then get a helper, Gather an assortment of 1/2" extensions and a 18mm socket, turn the steering all the way to the right and arrange the socket and extention on the hub bolt ussally the top one works the best. With the tie rod still attached, start the enginge and turn the steering wheel to the left wedging the socket/extention against the axle housing pushing against the hub bolt. This should push the hub out. The helper may have to put some effort into turning the steering wheel. If not wack the knuckle with a BFH. As soon as it moves a little, turn the wheel the other way and do the same with the other side.

Ya know after reading a little closer I see that your working on a 1/2 ton. DUH! Those hubs can suck to remove. The knuckles are aluminum. Heat is not a good idea. If the hub is bad, I usually use a air hammer to get the corrosion broke loose.

I agree, snapon and matco also make a tool for this and very easy to do even on the hardest ones.

I am amazed at how this new stuff seizes the way it does I have had better luck with 60's cars removing parts..I had the same issue with a front U-joint I thought it was gonna bust the input shaft before that stupid joint came out!!!! the press was almost maxed out before the cup popped out like a bullet..I never saw anything like it...
