TTI Headers ( Rust )

TTI Headers ( Rust ) - 09/24/10 01:04 AM

Anyone have any issues with surface rust on their TTI ceramic coated headers ? I have had these headers for about 6 years , after the first season the passenger front tube that goes across the top & down has had surface rust ( probably over the hole surface that shows ) . I am ready to pull the engine to freshen and will be seeking a way to re-coat . Kind of a touchy issue since we had to pay so much for them you would have thought they would have lasted . Just checking to see if I am the only one with the problem . Gary

No issues here but mine were purchased used and have some rubs and scratches where the coating is gone and rust is showing, I'd like to get mine recoated as well, do you have a quote for that yet?

Yes I do , I was told it would be 250.00 and in the finish of my choice , meaning the same as I have or a brite ( like chrome ) . Gary

Several years back TTi had a quality issue for the coating process with their outside subcontractor. My suggestion would be to call Sam (owner) and explain your situation..

Juts my $0.02...

I already did , seems like the guy was not interested in what I told him . Any way I can get them recoated locally and save the shipping cost too . Like I said Got them 6 years ago & called about them 5 years ago with not good results . Gary

I had same problem with rust on my TTI's last year. While I had my motor out for it's rebuild. I sent them out Jet Hot(they have a web site). They do headers for NASCAR and NHRA. Their work was great and cost around $250 with a 2-3 week turn around. another thing I did last winter when I put my car up for winter, was to spray them with WD-40. In the spring I sprayed and wiped them with Simple Green before I fired up the car to remove the WD-40.So far they are holding up great no signs of rust.

Hey Old dog , I thought about Jet Hot , even got their DVD on the process , looks pretty good , was told 350.00 though , but a buddy of mine sent his there & for some reason they got lost somewhere in their plant ( OHIO ), they were found about 6 weeks later , so I decided to go with the local guys . Same thing happened to my TTIs. Started surface rusting within months of install, in Dallas Texas no less! We are not known for rust issues around here. I called to inquire on the warranty, and they informed me that I would have to call their coater directly, which went no where in a hurry. Doesn't make sense to me either?? You pay the $$ for quality, and then you receive the run around when there are quality issues.

Regardless, their fit is great. I just wish the coating and customer service were better.

I had a set of rusty Pro-Parts that I got blasted and the guy quoted 250 for a ceramic coating, so it looks like a standard rate. He said they would do surface prep and everything. This was in Santa Ana, Ca., not in the boondocks so maybe the price is a little lower here.

I read about the ceramic ones rusting around welds and down by the collectors so I ordered mine in raw steel and just plan on repainting them if I need to.

I purchased a rusty set of TTI headers, TTI blasted and recoated them for $100 plus shipping. They even straightened a tube for no extra cost.

Yes the coating is not holding up well on my TTI's either....Pay big money for the best and it's still crap.

I keep reading that using them on a new engine when you first break it in can damage the coating. Is that the case for any of you? I'm building a new engine for my Challenger and was convinced I wanted TTI's but now I'm not so sure...

I've got Dougs and they did the same thing. I think we're asking a lot from coatings that go through so many heat cycles. Even high dollar chrome will discolor and rust over time. Thats why there's so many trailer queens, If you want it to stay pretty, put it in the garage and through a cover over it. I know that sounds cold, sorry.

I broke in a 340 with the polished finish 5 years ago, no rust or discoloration yet.

The TTI's on my hemi are 8 yrs old & still look great w/ no signs of rust or discoloration. On the other hand, I just bought a budget set of Flowtech ceramic coated headers for my 383 power wagon & they're absolute junk. Coating is trashed after just one month.

Re: TTI Headers ( Rust ) - 09/25/10 09:50 PM

Hey MC , I wish mine went 8years , I guess like anything else , could have been a bad day for whom ever was working that day , or like was previously stated there was a time when the caotings were suspect . I did not have a fresh rebuild when there were installed so I cannot go with that theory either . Just was not meant to be this time . I am in no way bad mouthing the headers at all , very pleased with how they fit , I had heard storys that I would have to ( tweek ) them just to install them but not the case . Fit very well . Just the coating sucked . Gary
