What is the best way to remove the factory under coating from a fender?
I am doing this at home,(can not make to much of a mess) I do not have acess to a sandblaster. My body guy said not to use a torch or I will run the risk of warping the fender.

Mineral spirits may soften , and clean it off.

NO QUESTION!

I got the steam clean treatment, about 2 hours and it is all gone...

I would think it has to be on a rotisserie to do it; that steam cumming back down on you would be bad

Use a propane torch,just be careful.Did my whole car that way. Mike

Propane torch and a putty knife. Heat it up, scrape it off. Clean any residue afterwards with a rag and some mineral spirits.

I used an electric heat gun and a scraper, so I wouldn't have open flames...

I heated up about half-foot square areas and scraped it rigt off. Prior to heating it, there was no way it would scrape off. I just took mytime and was careful. My buddy got a nasty rash from the stuff once, so try to stay clean. It's a labor intensive process, but it does come off when heated

I used multiple methods, but I will tell you now for your job, go out and buy a $4.99 can of automotive stripper at Wal-Mart. Spray it on a two to three foot section, let it wrinkle, while its doing that get you some newspaper and a straight edge razor blade and holder, and/or you can also use a small scraper and simply peel it off. It may take a couple of applications and a little time, but its safe, you wont warp the fender and your mess will be minimal. I did the enitre bottom side of my car this way. Ive tried about every way at one time or another except the pressure washer thing. I think that would take some time also, not to mention alot of mess.

Hello everyone,

The best way to remove it is a steam pressure washer along with some gasoline in a pressurized sprayer. But like 6T6Cuda said, either the fender needs to be off the car or completely stripped down on a spit. I can get all the nooks and crannys, spotless.

Usally the most feasable way is with a little heat and elbow grease. If you go with heat I recomend using Map Gas in one of those trigger torches. The reason I say map gas is because it gets hotter and I can transfer the heat quickly to the undercoating and scrap it off fast before it transfers much heat the the sheet metal behind it. It just gets the job done faster than using LP gas. You have to be careful.

I would be leary of using any kind of solvent to soften it up if I was ever was gonna put a torch anywhere on the car.Hopes this helps you good luck with your car.

Brake parts cleaner in the spray cans seem to soften it up. Learned this by accident though. Good Luck ,Jay

The fender is already off
I think I will go with the brake cleaner, and check out the stuff from Wall E Mart.
I know there will be a lot of elbow work to be done.

I don't think the brake cleaner will put much of a dent in it. I did my inner fenders with paint stripper and an engine gasket scrapper. The undercoating bubbled up and came off nicely. I cleaned it up with lacquer thinner and it looked just like new underneath.

I am gessing any product that is petrolum base will soften up the undercoating enough to scrape it off.

If you have a whole car to do, then a steam cleaner is the way to go. I did two different cars completely in one afternoon. I could never spend a whole summer on one project. Pressure washing isn't any dirtier than laying on your back with a scraper in hand.

If anyone is close to Cincy I'd consider doing it for you.

I used acetone to soften it up and then scrape it of with a putty knife. then scotchbrite with some acetone for the residual and your done.
