70 cuda 340 driveshaft - 09/15/10 02:10 AM

I checked the parts book and found two drive shafts listed for a 70 cuda 340,

2883636 which is 43.60"

and

2883769 which is 43.85"

Which one is correct? It shows they are the same for the other V8s as well.
Thanks

approx 1/4" (.250) difference between the two shafts,...a 70 340 Cuda would only be equipped with a 8 3/4 rear,....Iwould think the difference is between 3 speed Auto and 4 speed application?

I know the shaft in my 340 Cuda/Auto is 43.625

Just went through a bunch of broadcast sheets for this driveshaft thread: '71 Barracuda driveshaft

The 636 is used on 383 auto & 4-spd and 440/426 auto.
The 769 is used on 340 auto & 4-spd and AAR. one "big" one "small" u-joint

They are both listed as "big" u-joint, but I am unsure of any differences.
I believe the 636 is 3.25" end to end and the 769 has a taper in the tube length.

If he has the broadcast sheet, what does it say?

AARs and some other small block applications used the small u-joint in front & the big one in the rear.

Barry,
The build sheet says 769. So, what other applications can you find that drive shaft? 318s?

From 1970 broadcast sheets, 769 used in;

318, 340, 340-6 & 383 2bbl Barracudas / Cudas.

I better clarify that a little, I meant the 318 4-speed cars.

D31 cars used a different shaft.

Barry, do you have any sheets that show a different driveshaft for any 340 '70 'Cuda?

I know I do not have many of those on file, but I can look.

I have 32 for BS23H0 D13, D21 & D32 cars so far, they all show 769.

You mean D13. And the parts book doesn't say that and neither does the build sheet.
Thanks

D31 (904) is shorter, so different shaft.

D13 uses the 769.

Are manual 3-speeds the same length as a 4-speed?

Re: 70 cuda 340 driveshaft - 09/16/10 08:36 PM

I'm guessing there is a long 3-spd tailshaft & a "short" a-body version?

What's up with all the "DRIVESHAFT" questions this week?

Are the following statements both TRUE?

All A/B/C/E 904s are the same length "SHORT" & there are "SHORT" 3-spd & 4-spd manual transmissions for A-bodies.
** Is "SHORT" the same dimension? **
All A/B/C/E 727s are the same length "LONG" & there are "LONG" 3-spd & 4-spd manual transmissions for B/C/E-bodies.
** Is "LONG" the same dimension? **

Yes, to the Long question.
im not sure on the short question.

and not that this makes a difference to the driveshaft length, but, a-body 4-speeds used both the small (904) and the large (727) output shaft splines.
while all of the B+E body 4-speeds all used the large spline output shaft
