426 Hemi fabricated valve covers - 09/09/10 06:01 AM

Anybody have pictures or opinions on which fabricated valve covers are good/bad?
I think the covers "nitromikee" on Ebay had for sale (Williams MFG?) looked the best from what I could tell, but there seem to be so many now it's hard to tell what's what.
Anybody have fabricated valve covers on a gen2 Hemi?

I was going to chime in, but you stated fabbed, so I kept quiet. I will mention, not that I will personally support them, but I like the Indy CAST covers I have for a couple of reasons.

On each cover, one front and rear bolt are eliminated and replaced with a stud the cover slips over when installing them. The rear ones happen to be the ones you can never reah anyways, and the studs hold the gaskets in place when putting the covers on. Plus, you put what ever breathers in them you want, and they clear everything. So if clearance isn't an issue, I guess the fabbed ones are ok, but I would build them the same way Indy did on the cast ones. I would also recess the bolt heads, but that's me I guess.

I have Barton covers right now, which I think are StageV (?) and I like the look of a cover with no name, and I'm leaning towards the fabricated covers as far as looks go. It's an old car with a Hilborn.
I don't mind the Indy covers, I'm just not sure it's the look I'm wanting...

Here's the Barton covers... just not my cup of tea.

How about Ansens ?

I bought a set for my buddy in Oz and they were a nice piece...made here in California too and not too spendy.

I don't mind those, and I know a few older sets with the fins look nice too... I sold a set of aluminum finned covers about a year ago, I should have kept them and tried them...

I think they did finned ones too These are just plane heavy cast aluminum

I got them as a show-special from Ansen in June, makes them even better.

I sold these for a song- I just didn't think they would look right, but I never really gave them a chance..

I'm thinking of switching to something like these....
Hoping to get me interested in jumping back on my project!

If you ask me.....which you didn't of course those look too modern for the rest of the engine/car...

Re: 426 Hemi fabricated valve covers - 09/10/10 04:34 AM

I like them because they don't really have a "date"..?
They seem to be big expanses of sheetmetal. I find my Barton covers to look a little too "polished"....?

Here is mmissile's B body, it's the only pic I have of a car with the fabbed covers...

I belt sanded the logo off mine...I would bet you could do the same on the ones you have. I try and remove any names or company logo's off my stuff. Looks tacky with all that on it. If I were sponsered, then maybe I would leave it. I let the car's attitude speak for itself. Nothing badder than a stroked efi injected street hemi with a +0.750" lift cam and 3.5" exhaust....

One with Hilborn stacks is pretty close.

How about doing an "engine turned finish" on the covers, just a thought for the retro look

I've seen this guy's work. http://www.dragracecanada.com/pipeline/IndustryProfiles/031.asp In addition to building hemis that haul he makes nice un-pretentious fabbed covers like you're looking for. Made in Canada to boot.

Moroso covers.
Had to move the motor over so they would clear the coilover shock mounts.
