Power Steering pumps How many styles made & where 2 get - 09/03/10 05:22 PM

Ok having problems with a 68 charger. The customer put a 440 in it that I think came out of a 73 truck. He used the pump that came on the motor when he got it. He had a mechanic shop put a seal kit in it. It started leaking again and he at 1st thought it was the new steering sector we got for the car. I got him a replacement one and him and another guy put it in. I took a look at it and said it wasn't the sector that itwas the seal on the pump. We tried getting 2 from a local parts house and both have been wrong. They took the old one and are trying to figure out that way.

My question is how many different types of pumps did chrysler use? Where else can a guy find a good one? Not looking for a numbers correct just one that works! Also I know this but someone told the customer that you can use ATF in power steering systems. I told him yeah in new cars but not in old cars. What is the real reason to that? Is the ATF too strong for the seals? He seen that the other shop has red fluid in there and then someone said yeah you can use ATF so they did.

thanks

Re: Power Steering pumps on 440's where to get? - 09/03/10 06:43 PM

I had my pump rebuilt by Firm Feel. A little expensive but it has worked great. Your local autoparts store can probably get you a reman pump in a couple days also.

Muscle era cars tolerate ATF as power steering fluid. It was sometimes recommended or approved. The friction modifiers added to ATF to help the clutches in a transmission apparantly are not helpful to the power steering system however.

Power steering fluid is better... plus readily available at parts stores Walmart ect. and not too expensive so it is preferred for older cars.

Some newer cars absolutly will not tolerate the wrong fluid. My '98 Neon works beautifully with MOPAR fluid. With anything else it screeches and squeals for 5-10 min after starting.

Some of the newest cars use synthetic ATF+4 as power steering fluid so you just have to check the owners manual.

I think 440 source has them and the pulleys.

There was Saginaw, Federal and one other type. Best advice I can give is matchup the pictures of yours and the reman so you get one that fits your brackets.

I take a closer look at the sb one and the BB one I have

IIRC the lines are diff on them...at least the BB one at the box anyways

one reason I swaped to the manual steering on my 440 truck build

needed to have pressure line and return fabed up to hook to the box with the MH BB pump

as far as I know its either a federal pump..or saginaw pump on BB,IIRC they used both

Differences between TRW and Federal pumps

Federal pump has a tapped hole in the end of the pump shaft.

TRW/Thompson pump has a hex-shaped hole or no hole in the end of the pump shaft.

Federal pump uses a reservoir cap with "ears" much like a radiator cap.

TRW/Thompson pump uses a reservoir cap that is round and may have vertical serrations but no "ears".

NOTE: Federal pump reservoir cap will fit on a TRW/Thompson pump.

Hey GTX6970, looks like you got a lot of info on these. Does it look like I have the brackets going right in my 65 New Yorker? Thanks- Pat
