Chrome ignition box or orange? - 09/02/10 03:09 AM

I have a mildly modified 440 in my 68 Charger will I be ok with the Chrome box for my new electronic ignition or should I stick with the orange box?

Either one should work fine for your application. Just avoid the gold on the street.

(1) yes (2) Dont buy an orange box (the new ones have a significant # of reported probs).

I'm fixin to install electronic on my '69 Coronet. So what are my options instead of the orange box? Where to find a good one? How will the Chrome hold up for everyday use? The last conversion I did was about 10 years ago, no problems with the orange units then.

If you didn't know, make sure you install an electronic voltage regulator when you install the electronic ignition.
It's required, 69's have point style voltage regulator.

I ran a chrome on the street for quite a while. No problems.

You can also try the box from FBO.

Switched from orange to chrome box. Couldn't be happier!

Before my car went into the body shop i put 6000+ miles on my car a year for 3 years with no problems.

My girlfriends Dart right now has an ornage box for 2 years now with no problems however she only put on maybe 100 miles on it

I ran orange boxes galore until 10-15 years ago. All of the sudden I had failure after failure.
I run chrome boxes on everything now- my motorhome has a chrome box. Trouble free.

My only deviation is my Jensen Interceptor. I went with an FBO setup, it works awesome.

You could install an HEI on it there are several threads here about it....

Want a mopar box get one for the Dodge ram with 360 -1980s version reliable and not limited rev wise. Myself I would use a pertronix reliable and easy to install and have never given me a problemI have used all the mopar wonder boxees and own all except the gold. The stock box works every bit as good and I saw no et advantage period

I still vote HEI *I'm biased cuz I got HEI* it smoothed out the idle, makes for crisper acceleration, and I noticed the other day, that when I downshift and let off the gas it isn't poppin out the exhaust anymore, which tells me that its burnin the fuel better

I wanna try an E coil w & wo the HEI module to see which is making the most difference. What is the white "thermal paste"? It's gotta be better than the dielectric grease I was using and the small capsule that come w those modules has the white paste. I didn't have any probs but I'm paranoid about (ign) breakdowns and anything I can do ahead of time to better my odds...

Not sure what the white paste is made of, all I know is it helps to transfer the heat the heat sinc, so your module won't fry. As to which component is helping the most, I think its 50/50. The module is has better capabilities, especially in higher RPM's, and the coil fires hotter, so together...KABLAM

What's the brand/part # of the paste so I can grab some. Reportedly GM back in the early 70's hired some retired NASA space scientists who subsequently developed the HEI module . I've ran it & it does kick out one heck of a spark & Jacobs ign also reports that it it the only module that increases dwell as rpm increases.

I have had this orange box on my 63 since 1998. Still works great on my 63. I shift it about 6200 and it never misses a beat. Ron

I'm glad they retired, as most GM guys can tell you those HEI modules were very prone to failure.

My buddy's Dad had GM cabs in the early 80s and used to toss spare modules in the glovebox of every cab.

Now that you mention it I remember that.

And that's probably because they were in the distributor with the heat and what's the chance they put the paste underneath when they replaced it.
I have the hei on one car and plan on adding it to another but Once the wiring is in place they are an easy replacement if they do fail and they are cheap. You can run a hotter coil too.
If it's good enough for the Renault Lecar, it's good enough for me.

The white paste is a silicon compound that promotes heat transfer. It is also called heat sink compound or grease used in electronics for mounting high power transistors to heat sinks. Radio Shack stores have it. Look up 276-1372. I know of no difference between the white and clear compounds.

Never had a prob with an orange box, but I run chrome boxes in both the SSP and B-cuda because I don't WANT to have any problems. I have a few orange boxes and OEM black boxes on the shelf collecting dust. Chrome is the way to go...

thanks Craig, That's what I was looking for, I'll give em a call. I want the white paste
