Chrome ignition box or orange? - 09/02/10 03:09 AM
I have a mildly modified 440 in my 68 Charger will I be ok with the Chrome box for my new electronic ignition or should I stick with the orange box?
Quote:(1) yes (2) Dont buy an orange box (the new ones have a significant # of reported probs).

I'm fixin to install electronic on my '69 Coronet. So what are my options instead of the orange box? Where to find a good one? How will the Chrome hold up for everyday use? The last conversion I did was about 10 years ago, no problems with the orange units then.

You could install an HEI on it there are several threads here about it....
Quote:I wanna try an E coil w & wo the HEI module to see which is making the most difference. What is the white "thermal paste"? It's gotta be better than the dielectric grease I was using and the small capsule that come w those modules has the white paste. I didn't have any probs but I'm paranoid about (ign) breakdowns and anything I can do ahead of time to better my odds...
it smoothed out the idle, makes for crisper acceleration,

Reportedly GM back in the early 70's hired some retired NASA space scientists who subsequently developed the HEI module .
Quote:Now that you mention it I remember that.
I'm glad they retired, as most GM guys can tell you those HEI modules were very prone to failure.
Quote:The white paste is a silicon compound that promotes heat transfer. It is also called heat sink compound or grease used in electronics for mounting high power transistors to heat sinks. Radio Shack stores have it. Look up 276-1372. I know of no difference between the white and clear compounds.Quote:Quote:I wanna try an E coil w & wo the HEI module to see which is making the most difference. What is the white "thermal paste"? Not sure what the white paste is made of, all I know is it helps to transfer the heat the heat sinc, so your module won't fry. As to which component is helping the most, I think its 50/50. The module is has better capabilities, especially in higher RPM's, and the coil fires hotter, so together...KABLAM
