take off the yellow "ign" wire off of the starter relay to disable the starter. turn ign sw to "on" & check for voltage at the ballast/coil positive primary/"point" of the ECU pentastar connector (assuming 4 pin ECU/2 terminal ballast). Have a helper hold the key to "start" & recheck the above.

take off the wire from the coil negative primary terminal & w a jumper wire w alligator clips on each end ground the negative primary terminal (not the wire you removed from the terminal) to ground repeatedly like Morse Code and w the coil secondary wire (the dist end) held 1/4" from ground see if it will spark as you make/break contact (ign on) w your jumper wire. This tells you the coil/ballast/ign sw and their attending wiring is OK and leaves the ECU and the dist pickup (& their attending wiring) as the culprit. The above could perform OK when cool and act up when hot but you should see something. Holler back.

Have U checked the fusible link @ the bulkhead connector?

I am not exactly sure what you mean by coil secondary wire. A side note i tried a different dist. Three ignition boxes and 3 coils 3 ballast resistors some old some brand new.

The wire from the coil center terminal to the dist center terminal.

do you have a groung from engine to frame, frame to battery, and battery to engine?
if all grounds are good and installed correctly and large enough cable, the positive cable should had been the one to melt when shorted, not the negative.

we gotta figure this out so your car can stop living at my house. sounds like we need to start by grounding the hell out of it.
