79 360 block vs. earlier 360 block - 08/10/10 12:50 AM

I am planning on building a stroker motor, and a guy has a 79 360 complete for a cheap price. Does it make any difference if i use a 79' block verses a 70' for my 74' cuda. Thanks, Ken

Not really, been there done that. Unless somebody just tries to convince you that the earlier blocks are magical and will make more power

I'd use the one that is in better shape, and by better shape I am referring to the one that will need to be bored out less to clean up. If both are in similar condition, flip a coin

The only thing I would add is if they are in similar shape have them sonic tested and go with the thicker one.

Despite the above statement the earlier 360 blocks are slightly better in general thickness wise. They will also have closer to 8.3 -1 comp vs 7.5 on later 360s. I can say this much, if the 79 is a E58 360 get it. It is one of the better engines out there and if done right will give you a long life span and no trouble
