440 Gas Mileage-Car?

440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/07/10 10:01 PM

I am hoping to get my car going this week if all goes well.

My car is a 74 Dart Sport with a 440. Holley 750 3310, Road Runner .450-.455 cam with a Street Dominator intake. 4.10 gears with as much tire as I can cram in there.

It isn't so much what will mine get right now. I know I need to swap in some taller gears and a different carb before the word mileage crosses my lips.

I am curious as to what type of builds you have, and what you do get on the hwy for mileage.... This would be for a car build, not trucks etc.

Please spare me the "I don't care, I fill it when needed..."
stuff......I know that much...

I know they weren't made for mileage, but I would like to drive my car a fair amount when done.

Thank you as always. ROB

berri-crab?

What is that?

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/07/10 10:19 PM

Stock, tired, '77 440 in my wagon with Thermoquad, and 2 something gears out back, I was averaging 12-14 in the daily grind.

'Berri-carb' is a Holley carb, as in holly bush.

Not everyone speaks 'Doc'...

Berri crab ? .. = .... Holley(is also Holly which is the leafy-decoration can contain a red berry). Crab ... is the MISspelling of the word carb !

Just a inside JOKE ... not of my making. I just WISH I could take credit for that !!

Get a ThermoQuad and tweak-it good.

I am on here enough and I know you are a funny person.

I am leaning towards the Eddy 800 for my carb, but the holley will have to do for now.

Come to think of it, getting the engine installed will have to do for now

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/07/10 10:36 PM

You won't se much if any difference in an Eddy and a vac Holley. Maybe if it were a DP, but not a 3310.

If you are looking for the best MPG ... the TQ is the best route ...short of DPFI.

Seriously.

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/07/10 11:29 PM

Like every Mopar guy, I have a shelf full of Thermoquads. Once the thing is running and running good I will do some experimenting. Until then, I will leave the Holley on there.

Thank you......Seriously.

Pffft~!

He wants it to run down the highway not melt/warp the plastic TQ body all over the motor and go up in flames...

Used to pull down 14-15 with .528/284 mechanical cammed, Holley 750 3310 and header equipped '71 Barracuda. 3.23 gears made 70 mph a breeze.

With 4.10's you're going to be limited to 60mph if you want to see any better than 10.

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/07/10 11:33 PM

But MOST Mopar guys use the TQ's in a TQ toss !

COOL ....and when you want to experiment just pick a good carb ...and then get a set of BRASS floats.

That is a must have.

Headers and dual exhaust along with a hot ignition should help with mileage. Get a 12 inch stock converter. Thinner tires. Weight reduction. Good advance curve. ect

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/08/10 12:26 AM

......OH ....definately VACUUM advance ! ...and you should also be able to pull a 2.76 gear with a T A L L tire ...no problem.

Better hurry, take the car with the Holley carbs--you want to get there FAST!

Doc is right, a sharply tuned thermoquad is the ticket. Do yourself a favor and buy a LM-1 or similar device. You will find it was the best money you ever spent. Dave

Wow, a whole post of junk here.

Nothing wrong with the Tquad in COMPETENT hands.

I ran a set of 4.10's in my 300, got 15 mpg from Memphis to Tucson and I ran it at 75+ most of the way. It's all in the combo. I had a set of 3.23's in it that got WORSE mileage because of the combo.

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/08/10 03:32 PM

I am running an 8.25 right now so gear changes are not as easy as an 8.75. Building an 8.75 later this winter, but right now the 8.25 stays with its 4.10's.

I am thinking something like 3.23's and some 28" tires with a Thermoquad for daily use.

I have three dragstrips that are all around 100-120 miles away so the drags will not be a daily thing.

Ten years ago I got the grand idea to move about 20 miles from anywhere. And they I got the grander idea to build a fast, older car. The grandest idea however was when I realized that they first two ideas were not so grand for daily driving a 40 year old car

It is all good. I will hopefully get to drive it this week

Keep in mind that this has been a 5 year project full of vigorous starts, and long periods of rest etc.

Lots of interesting discussion here. I must have asked the wrong question though.

I was just wondering what types of BB cars got what for mileage.

Sounds like we have some mean machines at 4 MPG and some mileage kings too.

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/08/10 04:13 PM

The cam you are running is milder than mine was, which was mild too. I consider anything under .5" lift to be mild. I had a stick shift though, so converter slippage was not an issue for me. You have to remember that part of the reason OEM's went to lock up converters was because of highway gears, tall tires and mileage issues.

I once ran a 360 powered Dart with 2.26 gears, tall tires and a non-lockup trans, which got worse mileage than the 413 powered 300 with 4.10 gears, because the converter was always slipping at legal speeds.

You may wish to do a bit of math and see what your highway RPM might be. I did one for you, at 60 mph, with 3.23 gears and a 28" tall tire you are looking at about 2300 rpm, this is no converter slippage. As long as your converter stall speed is below this you ought to be ok.

Re: 440 Gas Mileage-Car? - 08/08/10 04:29 PM

I'm using the factory high stall convertor from behind a 360.

From what I gather, it should stall somewhere around 2200ish.

Others may know for sure.

Really?!? ...and just what part of it was "junk"!??!

I'm guessin' it was the part about the Thermobog.

Hey, if you wanna play around with obsolete parts that are warped, cracked and extremely difficult to get rebuild kits for, that's on you. If you want something that works and is currently available...

Doesn't mean my opinion is "junk".

How did you cruise at 75+ with 4.10 gears? I had 3.23 gears in my cuda and 75 mph was about my top cruising speed. You had to have had that thing wound out!

TOP cruising speed at 75 ? .... you will have to 'splain this further. What was your TOP speed ?

12 ....and 6 mpg ? .. gotsta' beez BERRI equipped !! ...

My 62 got 17 mpg with a 2.76 gear and ran mid-12's but at only 99 mph(because the motor was worn-out) ....but YET would get good-mpg driving to the 'Nats.

OF COURSE ...it was not BERRI equipped

CORRECTION ...it did have a BERRI intake.
