oil and temp send unit - 08/07/10 07:28 PM

i have a 1972 400 big block rebuilt and doing last minute replacements on these few parts and can't seem to get it correct...i am trying to install both temperature and oil sending unit...the problem is that o'reilly's auto has both parts as oil sending unit as S330 part number but its treads are to big so is the canister itself, the temperature sending unit is part number wt127 it also is small and what appears to be incorrect..i have a temperature switch located by water neck where the heater hose nipples are located and the temp switch in the block is alot bigger treads and overall bigger in diameter..PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN WITH THIS

BBs used two oil switches one gauge the canister and small light. The temp sender they had 3 for sure. One small for gauge and a large one light.I had an Imperial that had one that had 2 blades sticking up.All the senders have the same thread size.Temp sender Ive seen different size holes on the pump housing. Is this a motor home block? They might be different. My Imperial had signal sentry that had a sender for oil on the passanger side of block also.Rocky

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/07/10 11:25 PM

MY TEMP SENDER DOES HAVE THE 2 BLADE LIKE CONNECTORS ON TOP , I CURRENTLY DON'T HAVE NO OIL SENDER INSTALLED SO I DONT KNOW WHICH ONE GOES THERE AS I PICKED UP ONE AT A LOCAL PARTS STORE BUT THE TREADS AND SIZE OF THE UNIT WAS TO BIG.. AND THIS IS GOING IN A 1970 DODGE CHARGER BUT HAS A 72 400 BB ENGINE IN IT..

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/07/10 11:31 PM

The op switch like I said goes directly in the block and there are only 2 and they all have the same thread size.Make sure someone didnt screw an adapter for a mechanical gauge in the hole. The temp sender if you changed housimgs that might be the problem. What connector does your harness have?A lot of the housings have a hole for the sender and a plug that is a different size on the other side. That way either sender fits.Rocky

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/07/10 11:48 PM

ON THE BACK OF THE DRIVERS SIDE BLOCK THERE IS JUST THE TREADS WERE ONE GOES I ASSUMING NO ADAPTER BUT ON THE PASS SIDE OF BLOCK THERE IS SOME SORT OF FITTING SCREWED INTO THAT PORT HOLE...ARE YOU SAYING YOU HAVE TO PUT TO OF THE SAME OR 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF OIL UNITS IN REAR I AM JUST CONFUSED ON IT ...LIKE I SAID I WENT TO GET ONE AT O'REILLY'S BUT WHEN I TRIED TO INSTALL IT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE PORT THE THREADS ON THE OIL UNIT WAS A LITTLE TO BIG...I READ SOMEWHERE EARLIER THAT THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT SIZES OF THE SE UNITS BUT I DONT KNOW THAT FOR SURE... THE TEMP UNIT IS ANOTHER PROBLEM I DID SAME THING THERE AND IT WAS WAY TO SMALL I ONLY SEE ON THE WATER PUMP HOUSING WHERE THE WATER NECK AND THE HEATER HOSE NIPPLES ARE LOCATED IS NEXT TO WHERE THE TEMPERATURE SENDER UNIT IS AND ITS THE ONE THAT HAS THE 2 BLADES ON TOP FOR THE CONNECTION

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/08/10 01:48 AM

the oil pressure gauge should go into the hole on the passenger side a plug goes into the driver side. Might not matter though witch way it goes. The oil gauge has a big canister on it the oil light has a small sending unit. I am guessing that 72 came out of a c-body and is set up for hot and cold lights in the dash. you might have two temp gauge senders and no oil gauge sender. You might want to go with after market manual gauges as long as you in there.

I DECODED THE ENGINE AND IT SAYS A 72 CHARGER BASED ON THE NUMBERS ON THE BLOCK..CURRENTLY THEIRS A PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE , ARE YOU SAYIN PLUG THE DRIVERS SIDE AND INSTALL ON OIL SENDER ON PASS SIDE..

Yes the sending unit will fit better. please turn off the caps. It's considered yelling and impolite as well as hard to read. Thanks.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/08/10 05:52 AM

pic #2 is really bad but you should be able to see where the temp gauge sender goes. It's just a lil deal, goes right into the front of the pump. I also have a pump from an air conditioned car and it has both openings in the water pump plugged. So maybe that is why you have a sender in the block.

Well Stumps looks like you agreed with the wrong guy, although it may be easier. Factory did put em on the drivers side. Been a long time since I looked under this hood.

the canister for the oil pressure gauge. It screws right in where the other sender goes. Same size threads. Man look at how old that box is. Hmmm wonder how long I had that on the shelf.
Hope this helps.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/08/10 10:43 PM

You need the correct sender to match the gauge in the car. The old sender on the engine may not be correct for the car you are putting it in. IF you have a gauge there is a smaller hole in the water pump housing for the correct sender. You just have to look for it and then put a plug in the big hole.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/08/10 11:02 PM

i am going to double check, but the problem is , the car is 70 charger motor is 72 charger 400 big block... according to auto parts the temp sender is same on both cars as many different ones as well.. i need the one like in the first pic with the 2 blade type connectors and they dont have that listed for either years..thanks you have been so much help to me stumpy and others

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/08/10 11:26 PM

Did the original 70 charger have the two pronged sender or did it come with the new engine? I'm a little lost on this point.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 12:49 AM

thanks for writing back originally it was a 318 car so i am unsure of the motor and its components.like i said it is a 70 charger and has the ralley dash and the gauges but the motor is a 72 charger 400 based on the engine decoding..the 400 was rebuilt and it has the temp sender located by the water neck and the heater hose nipples..it has a temp sender on it and it had the 2 blade style connectors where the wiring connects too..i am about to go look it over with my flash light to see if theres any other places for another smaller temp sender unit..thanks and hope this helped a little more...thanks joe

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:11 AM

a 70 Charger will have a temp gauge and need the little single prong unit for that gauge. You can not assume that the 72 motor was set up for the present application. Your gauge pod should look something this. Mine is 68 but is the same except for the ignition switch being moved to the steering column.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:15 AM

sorry bout the poor photography I am a novice
any way here is where it goes. You should have no trouble finding this sender it was used for many years on all engines.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:16 AM

thanks, and yes i do have the exact style gauge, and know i dont wanna sound like i new the 72 was for the 70 because i know better i am thinkin that the 400 motor i have possibly has a different water pump housing which is throwing this all off, i need to look into more apparently..thanks again

This is the sender you will need for an oil gauge. It goes in the back of the block on the drivers side as you said but can actually go on either side to suite you.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:20 AM

you should use a 70 style pump housing but as long as the hoses match the radiator, either will work you still need the small sender for the gauge. The casting should be drilled for either sender. 72 or 70 should work.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:20 AM

I believe I even had one that the small hole was on top.Just look for a purple wire at the front of the block with I believe an angled connector on it.Thats the single wire for the temp.Rocky

rocky he is putting a big block into a 318 car is the purple wire still in the same place?

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 01:24 AM

ok , i see it now thanks a bunch , so the other holes where the heater hose nipples go and the bigger hole by the heater hose nipples goes into the housing they could be plugged if needed..and could you tell me whats the best way to remove the small temp sender ..again thanks joe

lol...i will kick it one way or the other , its coming out. anyways thanks to you all for your time and help on this simple but yet complexed problem i am working on, i shouldn't have any more issues on this .. , but i still need to know on the oil sender unit if i put one on the back of the block for the 70 charger gauge ...but is another needed for a light or not.... as i was a bit confused on that as part of it...again thanks to you all.......

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 04:41 AM

Only one oil pressure sender is needed. A gauge takes one kind and a light takes a different kind. the big can type is the one you need for the gauge.

Re: oil and temp send unit - 08/09/10 12:02 PM

Yeah Ma used about the same lengths of wires and color codes also. The only time you run 2 oil senders is when you have Sgnal Sentry type dash like Imperials had. They had both gauge and light.Same with the temp senders.Imps had gauge and a hot light at least my69s amd 70s did.Rocky

the rule of thumb says 1967-1976 V8s with GAUGES A,B,E body use the bell type oil pressure switch, and the small brass temp sender...pictured here....industry standard part#s
