Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/07/10 05:51 AM

I have a mid 80's 904lu that I want to rebuild. I will also need a TC of around 2400-2600. Dont want to spend alot, but want something thats going to last. The car is a 1963 Valiant Convertable thats getting a 360. The engine has 10.1, 2.02 valves and a .484 purple shaft cam. Not sure on the gearing as of yet, but around 3.25-3.50. Its going to be a weekend/ nice day car. I already have a tci shift kit for it, but would like some advice on where to get the rest of the parts. Thanks in advance for the help.

What part number should I be looking for? I looked on the site and didn't find anything listed for the 904.

What brand should I be looking at for a kit. I don't want some no name made in china crap. The shift kit I have new in box is a transgo tf-1. Is this worth using, or would I be better off getting a complete kit that has this already in it?

I see the TF1 as a street kit and the TF2 as a full race. http://www.summitracing.com/compare.aspx

Why would I want a race shift for a street car that may see the track 1-2 times a year? Just looking for some input. Don't want a car that is uncomfortable to ride in. The wife and kids will be in it.

Try calling CRT for a price on a l/u trans. I called about one for my '85 Ram p/u & iirc he quoted me $600. Can't remember the price for the converter, tho. These guys have the 904 l/u converters in different stall speeds http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm .

the TF1 is more a HD/towing kit the TF2 is not a full race kit it is there street/strip kit the TF3 is the full race manual kit

Would this be the kit I should look at with the TF-2?

I would strongly consider not using a lockup trans with that cam You may be asking for a surging and other udesireable problems Just a thought!

Unfortunatley, it's what I have. Its not really in the budget to change that. Can I change out the input shaft to eliminate this function? Also, where can I get a input shaft for the driveline. Around here they want $150 for a stock driveline and wont seperate the input. I am putting in a Ford 8" and will need a custom driveshaft made. When I got the car, it had an A833 and a tired 318. I am going with the 904 as it came with the car and was from a working patrol car, right up until it was t-boned. I just want to do it once and not have to pull it in a few years or sooner if I kill it.

Re: Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/09/10 08:13 PM

you can block the loc-up valve on the VB and get a reman TC with the guts left out to make it non loc-up(or just block the loc-up valve)

with out changing the input shaft

you will need a smaller 904 slip yoke as the od 833 use a large slip yoke like a 727

IMO,just a rebuild and block the loc-up valve and run the TC thats in it

should be the HD a999 if it a police car tranz,IIRC

The driveline that was in it has the 4 bolt flange. As for the TC, can I get 1 for a non l/u and use it? I need to buy a new 1 anyways. Is the steps to block the l/u function in the atsg manual? Thanks for the help and keep em comming

Another option is to modify the lockup valve to engage at 40mph instead of 30 so there is a little bit less torque at lockup. There was a TSB on these transmissions for shudder. The Transgo kits do modify the lock up valve body but does not have the substitute spring for the valve. There is a cheap 20 dollar shift kit out there that does have a new spring. I used the spring and tossed the other stuff but kept the nifty drill bits.
I do not have any road experience yet with this lashup as my engine is not yet complete. Just threw this out for something else to worry or think about!
The rebuild kit I used was an Alto Red kit with Kolene steels.

I just went and looked at the TC that I got with the 904 I have. It has a sticker on it that says

HS
LOCK
UP

Is this a high stall l/u? I will try to post the trans numbers later today.
Thanks for the help

edit:
I looked at the numbers and this is what i got. The first 2 were not stamped really well, but this is the best I could do.

If you could help me find what I have to work with, I would appreciate it.

Re: Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/20/10 03:46 AM

now will the tci 129000 kit work for this transmission? Is the tc that came in these cars a high stall convertor?

Re: Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/20/10 05:09 AM

yes some would have a stock high stall TC

if yours has the HS/LU sticker it most likly is

I think so on the kit

Re: Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/20/10 05:38 AM

Thank you for the fast responses. I had already orderd the kit and then find out it is not the 904, it kind of had me worried. Sorry not to get back to you on the bolts, but I plan on getting them from Fastenal. I plan on getting something other than the stock type. Not sure yet on what, just something different than stock in a grade 8. May be overkill, but if you knew me, I'm all about overkill.

Do you know what the stall is on the factory high stall convertors, or know where I can look this up?

Re: Rebuild 904/LU Where to buy? - 08/20/10 12:47 PM

1800-2200 depending on torque input from your engine

let me know if you need the stock bolts

904 and a999 are basicly the same the a999 being the heavy duty one IIRC

i am sure that kit would take care of it
