1970 'cuda + leather interior - no woodgrain in panels?

1970 'cuda + leather interior - no woodgrain in panels? - 08/05/10 05:06 AM

Hi everybody,
My 'cuda is coded for interior PRXW (white leather). I didn't know any better, but Dan (6bblgt) pointed out that he would have expected woodgrain inserts in the door panels.

My suspicion is that the interior panels have never been changed, based only on the fact that the car hasn't been restored other than some rust repair in the mid-late '70s by the previous owner, who bought it from the OO in 1974. I have lost contact with the previous owner, or I would ask him about replacement of the panels.

Has anyone ever seen a leather interior 'cuda with no woodgrain inserts in the door panels? The build date is 1-15-70.

Hmmm... curious...

Thanks for any thoughts

This page mentions them for Gran Coupe;

Check the date codes on your panels if / when you ever have a need to remove them.

I owned a PRT5 '70 'Cuda that did not not have the inserts, my buddy owned a PRT5 '70 Gran Coupe and it did have them... Both had unmolested interiors.

Original owner of a '70 'cuda with black leather interior and it does not have woodgrain on the door panels. Only the dash and console. It has the rest of the gran coupe stuff - overhead console and formed headliner. I've never seen woodgrain inserts on a 'cuda, but that's just me.

if we can expand this thread a bit ..... Kris' car also has a "seat belt" light on the dash, but has standard seat belts. Was this also part of the "leather interior"? I don't/didn't think the door panels had any date info on them?

What is the fasten seatbelt light on the dash? My car has the overhead console which has lights for low fuel, door ajar and fasten seatbelts. I don't think it has any sensor for the seatbelts (like the disconnect on my '74) but it just stayed on for a set time after the car was started.

FWIW, the car was ordered and picked up April 1970.

Dan- neither one of the two '70 Plymouths I mentioned above had the seatbelt light in the dash, just in the overhead consolette.

it's not a big flat panel like on the challengers, it was a thin wood trim that followed the contour of the door...hard to explain...let me see if I can google up a pic.

The "cornfield" '71 HEMI'Cuda 11K? miles (Jan. '71 car) - has black leather & the wood grained inserts in the ('Cuda badged) door panels. Maybe it's a '70 vs. '71 thing?

Who has a late '70 'Cuda with or without WOOD? 0b100004 that Rocket Restorations restored (& there are pics in the parts book when new) doesn't have woodgrain.

I have broadcast sheets that show it (L73) with & without A01 on PRxx cars.

Had a BS27HOB with PRX9 interior and no woodgrain in the panels.

However, I believe that when leather was ordered in a 'Cuda or Barracuda, then one was to get the woodgrain in the door panels, and an overhead console (at least in '70).

If you ordered the salt+pepper cloth interior, you would get red inserts instead of woodgrain.

I have a few sets of 'Cuda panels (and have had more) that had either the woodgrain or the red stripe inserts. And I do mean 'Cuda, not Gran Coupe.

A board member here has a 71 Cuda SRX9 leather and no woodgrain on the panels, believed to be original to the car.
Its' history is known basically since new.
Perhaps he'll chime in...

Well, that would explain why there's a seatbelt light on the dash... no overhead consolette.

The PRT5 EF8 'Cuda I mentioned above has an SPD of 6/8/70 and no woodgrain inserts.

Re: 1970 'cuda + leather interior - no woodgrain in panels? - 08/07/10 12:40 AM

Since the woodgrain could not be called out as a separate option, and there are many original 'cuda door panels with woodgrain, my theory is that the woodgrain was meant to be included when leather was ordered in a Barracuda or 'Cuda - particularly for the 1970 year

Assembly lines being what they are - substitutions were made - either intentionally or by oversight...

Don't know if adds anything, but the car has A01. The fenders have been replaced, so I don't have the fender-mounted signals.

Maybe (A01 + convertible) == (reverse light on dash)

For the woodgrain inserts, I'm going to guess that it came on GranCoupe models, but maybe just got installed (by accident?!) on a few non-GranCoupe models that had leather?

Re: 1970 'cuda + leather interior - no woodgrain in panels? - 08/07/10 06:11 AM

My 1971 Cuda did not come with the wood grain on the panels, November 1970 built. I started looking at every Cuda built in 1970 and 1971 that would have the leather interior and to see if it also had the wood grain on panels. I talked to a lot of people about this same subject and ended up buying the wood grain trim for the panels because most would say it should have them. Then I started coming across a few more that never came from the factory with the wood grain on the panels.I do not think there is an answer to this. Did Chrysler run out of panels and just toss the ordinary Cuda panels with no wood grain in my car. Did a door line worker put the wrong panels on the door and the car made it past the inspectors and never had them changed to the wood grain panels. Why would all four make it into my car? Why not just the backs or the fronts.I believe they would be put on the car in different areas in the plant, one being the Door line and one being the Main line. I guess you would have to be there on November 5th, 1970 to really know what happened.

Seat belt light on dash is more likely for C15 deluxe seat belts

A01 does not include it

I don't recall if a convertible Gran Coupe gets the seatbelt light w/o deluxe belts...

More clarification:
- Car is a BS27N0B, not a Gran Coupe rag
- Car doesn't have C15
- Car does have PRXW and A01:

P37 R11 Y07 EN1
M88 M91 N41 N42 N85
G33 J45 J54 L31 M25 M31
V3W A01 A62 C16 C55 G31
FC7 PRXW 000 115 C09995
E63 D21 BS27 N0B 23****

Maybe the reverse light will be another mystery like the lack of door panel woodgrain

Sweet car! And looks like it was originally ordered for Canada too!

Do you have both the reverse light on the dash and the seatbelt light, or just the seatbelt light?

The 340 auto convertible that I mentioned is earlier than yours and did not have the woodgrain either.

Mine's a 70 with black leather interior and no woodgrain, for what that may be worth.
