Package Tray Removal/Replace on E-Body? - 08/17/08 09:56 PM
I would like to remove the package tray on a 1970 Challenger to be able to install some speakers underneath the tray. I have the proper package tray, but want the screws to be going down to the trunk so they don't show on the package tray itself ( I think this is the stock style?).
My question is -- how do these package trays come out? Mine is still in very good shape so I don't want to damage it. Are they glued in or ?? Is it possible to get these out without damaging them?
Does the backseat back need to come out for this?
Thanks a lot!

If all you want to do is the install speakers, the factory installed the speakers from the trunk side using sheetmetal screws. No need to remove the package tray.

Thanks guys for the help!
My worry about putting screws up from the trunk (to hold the speakers) was that it might puncture the package tray....
What type of screws would one use to mount this from the trunk if you didn't want to poke through the package tray?
Thanks!

Thanks all!
Yes, I have the package tray with the speaker grilles, so I should be good on that.
For the backseat -- do both sections need to be removed (i.e. seat bottom and seat back) ? I remember that to get the seat bottom out, you just work it out ...but for the seat back - is this bolted in somehow? I've never tried taking this out.
Thanks again!!

Hi Stan...If you still have the original 1970 package tray...Follow the previous instructions..But you'll have two metal clips fastened to the bottom of the tray...You need to carefully slide your hand under the tray and pull straight up to release the clips...They look like the lower door panel metal clips....After you remove your seat look under the car's package tray metal frame a few inches front of the speaker holes...You'll see the clips...

I use bolts, nuts and washers to attach the speakers. Just a little insurance.
Also, it's a good idea to lay some screening material over your speakers...nylon screen mesh, speaker grill mesh, old pantyhose etc.
This will keep the dirt and bugs from damaging your speaker cones.
I use some velcro pieces to hold the package tray in place.
