Package Tray Removal/Replace on E-Body?

I would like to remove the package tray on a 1970 Challenger to be able to install some speakers underneath the tray. I have the proper package tray, but want the screws to be going down to the trunk so they don't show on the package tray itself ( I think this is the stock style?).

My question is -- how do these package trays come out? Mine is still in very good shape so I don't want to damage it. Are they glued in or ?? Is it possible to get these out without damaging them?

Does the backseat back need to come out for this?

The package shelf needs to come out. You'll need to take out the back seat, remove the 2 interior panels, & slide it out. It is not glued.
Get some machine screws with washers & nuts. From the top, drop the head of the screw thru the metal shelf. Have someone hold the speakers while you get in the trunk & thread on the washers & nuts. Slide the package tray back over the speakers. You're ready to button it up...
I'm assuming that you have the package shelf with the factory slits.

Yes, I have the package tray with the speaker grilles, so I should be good on that.

For the backseat -- do both sections need to be removed (i.e. seat bottom and seat back) ? I remember that to get the seat bottom out, you just work it out ...but for the seat back - is this bolted in somehow? I've never tried taking this out.

Both halves of the back seat have to come out. Remove the bottom bottom 1st. You will then see two screws going thru a u-shaped bracket on the bottom of the back portion of the seat. Remove them & lift up on the seat-back & it comes out very easily...

If you use half inch long #8 screws, you can drop the screws in the holes, get in the trunk and put on a couple of nuts to hold it then put a washer, lock washer and nut on the other two. Then go back and put the rest of the hardware on the two you originally put on, a one man job.
Caveat to rear speakers more of a problem on the Road Runners and GTXs is NEVER slam the trunk. I know, no one would do that on purpose but a wind gust or your cousin slamming the trunk can cause enough air pressure to blow the cones out of the magnets on the speakers causing them to distort. The only repair is to replace them.
