I don't know what it was for but if I owned it I'd cut all those support structures out of it and slip a new maint-free battery into it for my Charger.

That's EXACTLY what it's for. There are threads floating around on the net showing how it's done.

You sure? I've heard of that but it looks like it would be pretty difficult to cut all those walls out. Why would they make it so difficult?

Its a for a display. Back then nobody wanted a empty battery. Got quite a suprise when they pick it up.
