Eddys. Indy has a spotted reputation even the local people of Indiana. Russ seems to be the name brought up.

In either case some port matching and cleanup is recommended.

WHICH HEADS DO YOU LIKE THE BEST FOR STREET USE.??
I ALREADY HAVE A VERY NICE SET OF INDY SR HEADS BUT TO BE VERY HONEST I LIKED MY EDDY HEADS WAY BETTER. SO TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK.

** I AM LOOKING TO MAYBE TRADE MINE FOR EDDYS.**

Caps off please .

What don't you like about the SR's ?

IMO, you don't like the better heads. Truthfully, the right head will run best when matched with the right components. Running RPMs vs Indys is like trading in your Air Jordans for Converse All Stars.

theoretically, on a high rod ratio (say on a 383, or 440) for a street car, I'd think the smaller port volume and better velocity of the eddies would be preferred, the large port would be very lazy at low RPMS, especially with a streetish duration cam (thinking ~240@.050 or smaller hydraulic). short rod ratio (say, a low deck 500-512) would favor the SR's,as you will have a stronger vaccum signal from the piston coming away from TDC much sooner on the intake stroke...

Re: HEADS.** EDDYS OR INDYS FOR A STREET CAR.!?? - 06/29/10 05:43 PM

I visited Indy back when they had only the original 440 aluminum heads out (not SR). I knew several guys who had them yet seemed perplexed as to why they weren't blown away by the power.

Russ told me the big problem with Chrysler big block heads were the ports were way undersized. He said you could just look at a set of BB Chevy heads and see how much bigger they were. His Indy heads fixed that problem.

I asked him why, if BB Chevy heads were so good, my 440 with 906 iron heads routinely kicked their asses on the street or at the track. He didn't like that kinda question.

Anyway, a few years later they brought out the SR heads with smaller ports....

My opinion is that no one touches Edelbrock in terms of casting quality.

A good friend of mine told me the same thing, That my 440 street motor would be lasy if I used a set of MW ported indy SR heads(these heads have lots of port volume).
Now I am using a ported indy DP intake, the motor is 11.1 with a comp solid roller street cam and TTI step headers.
Also my car is a pig (3900 LBS) 3.55 gear with a 28 inch tall tire and the converter is redneck tight.
I took my friend for a ride after I go the car together, he has not said another word about the motor being lazy.
I will say this getting a converter that works with my combo has not ben easy the motor idles at 1100 RPMs if the idle drops very far below that the air speed in the intake port falls off and the motor does not want to idle in gear.

Well you took him for a ride....did you floor the
gas? I'll bet you did.

My definition of a lazy motor is one that is sluggish when you crack the throttle a little. Did you just crack the throttle a little and let him feel how well the motor spooled up? I'll bet you didn't.

It's not hard to make a car run well when you floor it. It's a lot harder to make one run well at any throttle position.

Well, after building 2 street wedges with Eddy heads I am putting a 512 together with INDY EZ heads. No instructions, normal length headbolts will not work, their dual plane manifold does not fit with their valley pan, normal sized distributor will not fit, the list goes on and on. I just hope after getting through this mess the heads will perform. If I were to do it over again it would be Eddys ported and even stealth ported. At least some of the stock stuff would've fit.

Well you would be wrong I did not come close to flooring it that would not be a good idea on cold tires.
I would be more than happy to take you for a ride and prove you wrong. If you ever come to Phx Az let me know I will have the motor warmed up and the top down waiting for you.

The Indy heads are a lot taller so no the stock head bolts will not work. And yes I had the same problem the intake one of the head bolts on the valley pan was in the way had to remove a little from the bottom of the intake kind of stupid. I had my intake ported by a guy in california and it really moves the air. Your heads will need to be ported to keep up with that big of a motor.

Re: HEADS.** EDDYS OR INDYS FOR A STREET CAR.!?? - 06/30/10 05:04 AM

For a street car, and under 500 cid I would use the Edelbrock RPM or Stealth heads as they are much easier to get to work with common intakes, rocker arms, headers, distrubutor, etc.

I think the Indy SR came out after an engine shootout in CarCraft in the early 1990's where the engine builder was limited to using a stock stroke 440, pump gas compression, and a street/strip cam. He used a Indy head and filled the ports with epoxy to get the air velocity flowing faster.

I have not used the Indy heads, but they do work good on race cars, on a mild street car I'm not too sure? The high offset rockers do cost alot more than the stock offset rocker arms.

Well let me say that my Indy SR heads work great on the street and make a hell of alot of power period.! That is not the issue its having to by all this high priced after market stuff because of the raised ports. ** i love the heads i hate the cost of headers and so that you need to buy because normal headers want fit unless you beat the hell out of them and ad pipe to make it work which i did but they still have issues. I just think the eddy heads are more user friendly.!!

All stock parts bolt up to the SR heads, 440-1 heads use offset rocker arms and MW intakes.

what's the build? what is the goal? what's wrong w/ iron heads? You ever going to the track? Are you going to running 3.23 gears and running exhaust mani's? if you answer yes then save your money and use stock heads. you won't be losing much. I find it funny when I see guys that spend all kinds of money on Eddy/Indy heads, roller rockers and use a stockish cam, exhaust manifolds, and a carterbrock carb.

Re: HEADS.** EDDYS OR INDYS FOR A STREET CAR.!?? - 06/30/10 02:44 PM

I have a set of the Indy-SRs and they're anything but "stock replacement". They require longer pushrods, a valley plate, external oiling gear, and a special set of TTI headers if you're installing them on an RB block.
BUT, the SRs have a lot more potential than the RPMs, and with a little work they'll easily out-flow the RPMs.
If you're looking for a 12 or 13 second street car, the RPMs are probably the way to go. Also, you should consider the Indy EZs (no special headers).
Good luck.
