DynoMax Mufflers - 06/25/10 09:29 PM

Anyone have a set of DynoMax UltraFlo Welded mufflers on their Mopars
And How do you Like Them?
I have 40 series FloMasters on my 69RR, can not stand the
Drone sound you get from them

I have them on my race car with TTI headers and X-pipe ending at the rear end housing. After tuning with open headers for years, put these on, tuned a bit more and went faster!

I can hear my Holley blue pump at idle but got compliments at WOT.

Flow bastards suck! I like mine 3" X pipe dump before the axle only complaints I get at 10.6 is too quiet???

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/26/10 01:01 AM

My dad has them on his 440 Coronet, with an H pipe, turned down after the axle. Sounds good, not too loud, no noticeable resonance.

Got a set on my f250, nice and mellow, and surprisingly quiet at idle and cruise, not obnoxious when I get on it. I would use them again, and again!

I have 3" Diameter ones with turn downs in front of the axle. Has a real nice sound at idle but really barks at full throttle. I love mine.

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/26/10 02:46 AM

I've had the same set on two cars now. When I had them on my old Duster I used a "H" pipe. When they went on the 'Cuda I went with a "X". Both cars had very similar engines and TTI headers. The only difference was between "H" and "X" was the fact that the Duster had 2 1/4 tailpipes and the 'Cuda is 2 1/2 all the way through. No resonance with either setup. Personally I prefer the sound of the "X". Both engines made good torque, they had different transmissions [ 727 vs 5 speed manual ] and a few other differences so it's a little difficult to make an "apples to apples" comparison as to which "X" vs "H" gave the best performance. Both cars are fairly loud, but not so bad that you can't hear the radio or carry on a normal conversation. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set.

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/26/10 03:19 AM

The sound is fairly deep, but not quite as much as Flowmasters. Personally I think Flowmasters sound a little better from OUTSIDE the car. Inside is a different story. Dynomax won't drive you nuts inside the car. As I said earlier the choice of an "X" or "H" pipe also affects the sound. The "X" gives what I would describe as a somewhat Nascarish sound under heavy throttle.

Forgot to give cost. Latest Jegs has 3in. as follows: center in and out=$81.99, offset/center=$73.99, offset/offset=$81.99.

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/26/10 04:17 AM

I've used them and love them. Similar in design but a fuzz cheaper is the Magnaflow welded mufflers. I've got a set of the Magnaflows on a 440 now. The mufflers are right before the axle and then I have a small set of Summit 14" long glass pack style mufflers right before the turn downs at the bumper and it sounds great. It has a great low rumble at idle, a mild growl when you get in the gas a bit, and then you know its got a 440 when you romp it.

Here is a very short clip of my dad's car with the ultra flows.

I agree Magnaflows are probably the same! I have them on my car (440 Dart) with headers/an X pipe and this is how it sounds:

Towards the end is some idling sound.

That was before I had much of an interior in the car. Now with carpet it is actually pretty quiet inside.

and here are the magnaflows breathing a bit harder

Tom, before you pop for the UltraFlo Welded, look into the new Dynomax VTs. You could run the 17956 and have a sweet sound, no drone, and plenty of noise at WOT. They really are pretty darn slick. We have three sets we are playing with right now.
And, there is rebate on them too so for $75 you get state-of-the-art technology, great sound, no drone, and all stainless steel body and tubes.

I plan on running Dynomax mufflers on my Road Runner. But I'm not sure I like the idea of a spring/back pressure operated butterfly valve in my muffler. I'm sure it works fine when new, but what happens if/when the valve corrodes shut due to condensation/soot? What happens if the spring/linkage breaks?

Just throwing it out there...

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/26/10 11:23 PM

CS, very good questions. With them constructed from all st. st. parts, corrosion is not as big of worry to me. They are cheap enough right now that I could live with the worry of the spring eventually fatiguing. I think it is 302 or one of the spring alloys of st. st. so it likely is long lived as well.

Seriously though, we just put a set of 17956's on a 12 second 68 360 barracuda. I have two more with the weaker spring (17156) coming this week and we will do a comparison between them to see what affect the spring rate has on back pressure and sound level at various RPMs. It is weird that such a short muffler, with a 3" core with minimal packing, has such little resonation and roar.

I have had 340s since 1978 and they are very tough to keep from resonating from 1800 to 2300 RPM. This muffler seams to prevent that roar very nicely.

As soon as we get the whole system sealed and leak free, I will try to get some very good sound recordings to share along with the data we plan to collect. Should get measurements later this week.

Thanks for the legwork Tom!

I saw these in the last Summit catalog, looks like an interesting twist on sound control.

I run the 3" Ultra-Flows and I love them. I always race with the pipes hooked up as I have never uncapped my 63 and they sound good. Much quieter then my boys Dart with Flow Masters and I can listen to my radio cruisin down the road. Ron

Thanks for posting your experience with the VT series muffler so far,
and i for one look forward to info on what backpressure is required to open the spring loaded valve.

Didn't Nissan have a factory muffler that had an internal bypass valve?

don't they have a lifetime warranty like other dynomax mufflers? if so, send 'em back and get a replacement for free...just went through this with my 17769 muffler that the case split on from corrosion.

I'd like to see a larger body VT series for even more stealthiness...if they made one in similar size to my 17769 I'd be tempted to replace mine...

I have the 17533s on the Coronet and they sound great with the 318 and headers. Quiet driving around and not horribly loud at WOT. I have no resonance from them either.

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 06/30/10 12:00 AM

I took me some time to convince Dabeast2 to put them on his Bee and another friend on his 496 67 Plymouth last year both thought they were a little loud first drive then they both swore they mellowed right out??

When I had mine installed a few years back guy that put them on for me (h pipe now an X pipe) said take it for a drive when I came back he was shaking his head. I said what. He says I cannot believe a 3" straight through mufflers can be that quiet. I said well that is what they advertise!!!

Re: DynoMax Mufflers - 07/30/10 01:13 AM

I just thought I'd throw in my with some feedback/experience with the new Dynomax VT's. I was running a superstock setup with max wedge/superstock exhaust manifolds full 3" out the back X pipe and TTI tailpipes and had a terrible drone with flowmaster super 40 series (flowjunkers). I read all the forums about exhaust/drone and what I gathered was... I'd never be able to rid the drone with cast iron manifolds. Well... I can't say enough about these mufflers! The VT's took care of it all! No more drone/vibration, I can hold a conversation and listen to the radio! My girlfriend will ride with me in the car now, so that says a lot!

Anyway, to say the least I'm very satisfied! My father is running a 528" Hemi and has just ordered himself a pair as well.
