Anyone Put A Zinc Anode In Waterpump Housing? - 06/24/10 01:31 AM

I am interested in putting a zinc anode in my cooling system. I have heard some people say it may help protect since I have an aluminum radiator and heads. Mainly concerned with protection of heads. I found some anodes that are attached to NPT pipe fittings. I would like to use a 1/2" port on the 440 ci water pump housing since I dont have a drain bung on radiator.
Anyone done this?

I used the 1/2" NPT ones in the block drain holes of a 383. I also got one from J.C. Whitney that hangs inside your radiator under the cap. Boat Zincs has all kinds of them, maybe something that will work in the pump housing. http://www.boatzincs.com/engine.html

Thanks.
Those are the ones I had hoped to use. I was looking to hear if anyone has done this.

Quite a few folks run them... First priority still needs to be good electrical grounds (block and chassis) and good anti-freeze maintenance. 2 years on "regular green" or 3-4 years on "extended life". Never Dexcool.

I got mine from them and did the block drain as well.
figured I would not change them that often. I also grounded everything as well to be sure.

had to cut it down by about half to fit in the drain plug. kept hitting block.

shouldn't be an issue. Just don't have a port to do it.
I would make sure that it doesn't lead to the impeller, some of these zinc's are quite long.

Haven't bought one (yet) but if it's not big enough or in a particular pump location to excessively restrict flow then you're good.
