Tire Dressing?

Tire Dressing? - 08/12/08 07:22 PM

I am getting ready to detail my car and would like to know what people have liked for Tire Dressing (tire black, etc).

I used to use basic Armor All - which didn't look too good, but now there are so many types on the market.

Also, I would especially like to make sure that I get a product that doesn't fly off on the fenders and wheel wheels when I'm driving.

Any suggestions or opinions on products are greatly appreciated!

Ok, thanks.

Has anyone used the stuff common at most parts places - like Black Magic Tire Wet,or similar?
Do these run off and end up on your fenders or quarters?

Thanks !

Soray them on, let them sit and wipe the extra off. The will sling all over the car.

If you read the instructions on the tire shines, they usually say to either wipe off the excess or just let it dry/soak in. Doesn't take long and that way there's nothing to get sprayed all over your tires. The stuff I use is made by castrol, forget the name of it but it's still the same bottle I bought 5+ years ago. Works well just have to keep the spray off the chrome rims or it makes a bit of a mess.

I used to use the stuff in the green bottle. 2000 or whatever it was. Seemed to work ok.

I use the weastlys tire bleach and have the flat black look to it,its got the dry look to it

weastly makes a spray silicone spray that work very well if ya can find it

dirt wipes off with a dry cloth after the silicone has dryed

lets see armorall do that

about once a week for the bleach dry look for me

works wonders on the white letters also, makes them very bright white

This is just what I heard but if you have Chrome rims do not use the westlys tire bleach. The stuff will make chrome come off where the tire meets the rim.

Otherwise I love the way it looks. I used to use Comet before I found out about westlys tire bleach

Re: Tire Dressing? - 08/14/08 12:32 PM

have not heard of it removing the chrome,I had used it on my chrome wheels for yrs with no probs

I did not spray the rim with it either and rinsed right away

I have alum welds now same thing,I dont spray the rim

and dont let it dry on the rim,I have heard it will stain the alum

I have not noticed it though, but rinse well and dry by hand

I polish my welds once a month so I may not be seeing any stains

good stuff though IMO

That tire bleach will ruin alloy wheels.

Re: Tire Dressing? - 08/14/08 05:16 PM

It was from a guy I talked to who had some chrome modular wheels from the 80's. They still looked new after all these years. Remember them? I think back then they were like $45 new each but you would be lucky if the chrome on them lasted 6 months.

I ask him about it and yeah thats when he bought them. And thats when he told me about the Westleys stuff I was buying.

And like you I never heard bad otherwise so I figured better safe than sorry. He says he put dressing on with either the sponges they sell now or wet down a rag with the dressing back then before the sponges were available.

I use turtle wax tire wax. I've used mguire's tire gel...the gel products work good and don't get all over the fenders or fly off when driving.

Re: Tire Dressing? - 08/14/08 07:43 PM

wow! modular rims,I remember those,I had a couple sets

had the keystones as well, used to paint the painted part the coler of my cars with a rattle can

another 80s thing I used to do was use a red permenet marks a lot marker and coler the white letters on the tires ,I would change coler every week red, blue, yellow, green, white
this was on the raised outlined letters

allways got the ?,where did ya get the colerd letter tires or is that those redline tires?

weastlys was the only thing that would remove the marker off the tire

I think that the ticket here

dont let sit/dry on the rim

I get very little on mine, but rinse right away

older now and like the blackwall look and the dry look to them,my M/T sportsman pros 29x15.5x15 look sweet on the 12" welds

Only if you let it sit to long, bleach is corrosive to almost any metal.

Ok so I looked up bleach and bleach is chlorine. Basically if tire bleach contains bleach it is in some form chlorine and chlorine is corrosive to most metals except for steel.

http://www.ashtachemicals.com/MSDS/Chlorine.pdf

This document says:

INCOMPATIBILITY: Chlorine reacts as an oxidizer with most organic materials (except
those fully halogenated) at room temperature. It reacts with many metals at elevated temperatures. Dry chlorine will react with titanium and aluminum. Wet chlorine is corrosive to most metals except titanium.

UNSUITABLE: Titanium, chrome, aluminum and reactive metals

So yes if tire bleach has chlorine in it, it will damage Aluminum and Chrome over time. If you use it make sure to wash the area of well after use.

But realistically I do not think you can completely clean out areas behind the face of the wheel, under the cap and around the lug nuts.

This stuff is better left for steel unchromed wheels

The sport bike shops have those pens just for tires now.

Funny I guess I'm no punk kid anymore.

I used that Westleys tire bleach (or what ever it's called) on my American Racing Torg Thrust wheels once. Wasn't on the tires but a few seconds when I scrubbed them off and rinsed. I noticed that there were some funny looking marks on the wheels. No doubt that they got there from the bleach. They're still there. Never again.

AERO 303

It's uses are endless, here are a few:
- All interior surfaces
- Weatherstripping on the door edges
- Exterior trims
- Engine bay plastics
- Tires

it leaves a nice matte finish not that greasy look of some tire cleaners etc...

I have been using Wesleys Tire Bleach to clean my tires and wheels for many years and never had a problem.

I think the look of the tires after cleaning with Wesleys is much more natural looking than the shinny greasy look of a lot of the tire dressings on the market.

Boy I certainly disagree with that claim. Everybody knows the main corrosive component of salt water mainly is chlorine, and everybody knows what salt water does to steel, so?

I use Westleys tire bleach on the tires of my 1969 roadrunner, it gives a very natural look and cleans the tire and at the same time makes the white lettering on the tire clean and bright. I don't know about what it does to wheels, I only use it on the tires. I spray it on a rag and wipe down the tires...no problems

? Let me be very blunt, anything with chlorine in it will rust the heck out of anything steel, regardless of what has been stated earlier, I don't want any others to be possibly misled

If you want to go the full extreme washing your car can be bad for your car, driving your car can be bad for your car, storing your car can be bad for your car, etc. I guess its better not to have a car at all.

Wait... could that be bad?

it is great for cleaning your tires, you won't believe the brown gunk it gets off, but I am very careful to keep it off my aluminum rims.
