Radiator ???? Stock or Aluminum....

ok guys we are going for a radiator now ,,,

A stock replacement or a aluminum one ?

We are not looking for a #maching , one later if the car get that kind of resto.

I'm thinking a stock w/extra cooling ..and a solid mounted fan or HD flex fan. I have been told by more than one SB owner that they run hot do to the lack of air flow when going less that 1,000 MPH....

I have an aluminum radiator, but a stock one has the advantage of easy mounting and it's easier to find a shroud for it. Shrouds make a huge difference in cooling.

If I were you I'd look at a stock type radiator with a shroud, and a clutch fan.

I was in your shoes about a year ago. My stock radiator (a parts store replacement from the 90's with no #s) just wasn't flowing. Local radiator shop closed up, so I really couldn't decide what to do. After freshening up the engine last year and finally going with an aftermarket temp gauge, I found that I couldn't even go five miles without running hot. Repops are big, big bucks. I wanted aluminum, but didn't want some generic Jegs type radiator. In the end, I wound up buying a new aluminum radiator from Wizard. I'm not crazy about the looks of the top tank, but it DOES accept the stock fan shroud perfectly. I run a cheap light weight plastic fan from Jeg's and the car will run at 160-170 all day long on the highway while buzzing along with 4.10s. I've idled in traffic and haven't seen it climb past 195 and as soon as I start moving it drops back down. I'm happy with it. Picked it up at Carlisle for $500.

The conventional top tank style aluminum from Mancini and others would be a good choice. They are high capacity and, when painted black, don't look out of place. I'm running a 26" version with the MP clutch fan in a Challenger and it works great.

I've heard some of the stock replacements are thin cored and low capacity so be careful if you go that route.

I have a Ron Davis radiator in my Challenger with a 505" stroker and it never goes above 180. They have direct fit replacements or can custom build anything you need. I was able to use the stock fan shroud and it bolted right in.

GlenRay radiators can build one with no part#s that will cool a wing car with no problem and still have all the correct mounting points for the car and the shroud for around $600. Bob has a good number of his rads. in wing cars and they do not have a prob. cooling even just driving around town!

Griffin makes a 26 inch Aluminum bolt in that can be painted black and looks close enough to original. Cost around $500 at Summit. You can mount a shroud to it also.

Check out the posts on the Champion radiators. They are cheap and most people seem to like them. I will probably go with one when I get that far.

Stock or direct fit aluminum - $$$
generic aluminum - cheap

2. fabricates skills
very good - aluminum
ehh not so much - stock

3. electric fan or pulley fan with stock shroud
pulley fan - stock
electric - aluminum

I tend to thinks the new aluminum radiators cool and have better flow than old, mainly due to width of actual cross tubes and airflow around them so I perfer the aluminum.
finally as said they 500 will buy a direct fit aluminum with correct mounts radiator.

I too have a Ron Davis radiator in my Challenger and it fits perfect and temp never goes over 190 even with 100+ temps out side.
