Alternator or something else? Crackling / pop noise - 06/18/10 03:38 AM

I was driving my 65 around today and noticed some popping/crackling noise coming from the engine compartment...the radio studdered/lights flickered when it happened the first time....
Pulled into my driveway to check everything and it went away... drove it around again and it popped once in a blue moon from the engine bay...sounded like something electrical popping...
Car runs fine, even at WOT, yet every 5-10 mins of driving i hear 2-3 pops

any ideas?
Is my alternator on its way out?
I checked all connections visually, yet I guess i need to get out the voltmeter

Disconnect the alternator belt and see if it goes away? Might be the alternator brushes are worn out?

I just had an alternator positive stud ground itself to the case intermittently and gave the same symtoms you described. Diconnect the positive lead and try to wiggle the stud. If it is loose...theres your problem. Do it sooner rather than later, I waited to diagnose and had some major fusible link, battery and fuse meltdowns.
