63 Push button trans to later 440 swap?

63 Push button trans to later 440 swap? - 06/08/10 05:15 PM

I have a 63 Polara with 383 and push button 727. The 383 is giving me problems and I have a low mileage 1976 model 440 sitting in the garage. Will the 63 push button bolt to the 440? Will I need a different torque converter? Is this pretty straight forward or is there a lot more to it than it seems. Thanks for any replies.

it will bolt up. but I think you will have a converter issue.

The 62 383 should be a forged crank.
the 76 440 will be a cast crank.

So internal vs external balance issue.

The other catch is the pre 66 727's have a smaller something that prevents use of common converters. You would have to special order it if they even make them.

Hi,
this is a fairly easy swap, motor mounts will all work, trans will bolt up fine, you can use the same converter but you'll have to weld balance weights on it cause the 76 motor is a cast crank and externally balanced, if you have the converter that came with the 440 you can knock the weight off and weld them on, not as hard as it sounds, you can't swap the late model converter in the 63 trans cause the input splines are different, everything else will work fine, use the water pump housing from the 383 so the radiator hoses match up. any other questions pm me.

Hi,
the smaller something Andrew is referring to it the center hub on the converter, I don't think this is an issue on big blocks, I've only ran into it on small blocks and 6 cyls.

Thanks Russ, exactly what I wanted to hear. I do have the newer converter. So I knock off the weights and put them in exactly the same place on the 383 converter? Is the 383 flexplate the one to use then? Did not think about the water housing, good advice then I can use all of my current brackets and accessories.

The 383 distributor shaft will be too short for the 440 so you might want to convert to electronic ignition so you can use the 440 distributor. Also use your 383 engine mounting brackets as the 440 has spool type mounts.

Or use a B&M #10237 flexplate that will allow the use of the existing converter. Be sure the crank IS cast before externally balancing the converter.
