4 Speed Clutch Pedal Return Question

4 Speed Clutch Pedal Return Question - 06/06/10 08:53 PM

I just connected all my clutch & transmission stuff and it looks great and everything seems to fit correctly.

When I depress the clutch pedal you can feel it over center and go to the floor. The problem is it does not return. You have to reach down and pull the clutch pedal back up.

I found a photo (Attached) from the teardown which show a sprig on the clutch pedal rod that does not appear in the manual. Do I need this part for the clutch pedal to return?

I figured the fork/rod/spring assembly on the bell housing forced the clutch pedal back up but it appears I have no clue how it works.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Thats a hacked setup.Where is the big over center spring?Unless you run a diaphram clutch you need it.Only springs are the OC and a small one on the fork.Rocky

I agree. The OC spring is on the other side of the clutch pedal arm. You can kinda see it in the pic but just barely. The fork spring is also installed.

Since the OC spring is there, any ideas?

Thanks

What clutch are you running.A B&G or a diaphram? Are the nylon sleeves in the cross tube installed and greased properly?Rocky

I bought Mopar Performance diaphragm replacement clutch. I did lube the nylon sleeves.

Do you think the OC spring could be weak?

How much free play do you have?

Re: 4 Speed Clutch Pedal Return Question - 06/06/10 10:08 PM

I was researching on the various forums and looking at my pics of the reassembly. I think I may have found the problem. I have attached a pic of the rod and I am thinking that it needs to be adjusted out more. In my mind that would help the pedal to pop back up into the correct position.

Am I on the right track? If not any ideas?

Thank You

That is exactly what i was getting at. At least with a diaphram clutch, too little adjustment will cause that to happen.

Not sure what the MP clutch is or if it applies to the B&B style ones or not.

When you say "it does not return" do you mean return from the floor? If so, this is common with some diaphram clutches and you'll have to remove the overcenter spring.

If you mean it comes back up but doesn't return to the up stop you need to adjust the fork pushrod free play to 5/32" at the fork and let the pedal free play take care of itself.

The pedal will push to the floor but will not return from the floor, I have to pull it back up to be able to depress it again.

So I may need to remove the OC spring eh?

ANY clutch will push the pedal back up. So there is an adjustment/installation problem. My guess goes with your own thought ... that you haven't adjusted the rod properly, although I can't understand how you could miss that on installation. Get rid of the O/C spring with that clutch.

I appreciate the info and I will check it out. The last time I did anything install on a 4 speed car was about 25 years ago so I am definitely far from even a novice.

Had same thing happen when i installed centerforce clutch. Remove that big OC spring and you won't have anymore problems. Be careful removing that big azz spring. You will still need a little spring to bring the pedal full back.

Thank you. It seems like the guy I bought it from had the same problem as I did.

Thank you to everyone who responded.
