904 Shifts high

as for the question...i have no clue. is the engine revving before the shift or is the engine bogging before the shift and then responding after the shift?

the automatic moparts editor is on the blink & a day or so ago a post with a link to an eGay ad was allowed to stand EDIT almost forgot,I would adj the bands.

Engine is not bogging, going 45 MPH and come down on it it revs up some and then comes back down. I had the tranny "refreshed" and it didn't do it before. Kickdown is adjusted right.

we better see what Kunkel has to say. EDIT I reread your post & it has been acting this way ever since it was "freshened"?

Double check the kickdown band with the pan off so you can grab the lever and move it by hand. It should move about 1/8th inch at the tip, mabey a fraction more or less depending on the ratio but 1/8th is about perfect. If you are positive it is good then pull the VB and pull the front band apply piston out and check the sealing rings. You can also check for proper functioning with air when the VB is removed and the piston and band all in place. Last thing I discovered after going through all this on a 904 doing the exact thing you describe, I had been useing ATF+4 and after about 3 fills and fooling with everything in the kickdown band apply circuits and no luck it was getting expensive and I was out of ideas. Finally one of the local tranny gurus here said the new fluid had way less friction makeing ability to give the newer trans smoother shifts. He recomended I refill it with typy F and I did and the problem was 100% gone. I have pretty much always used type F in old mopars and I will always use it. It made all the shifts better.

I do agree to listen to John Kunkel he is purty smart, I just slept at a super 8 a couple years ago.

Previous advice is spot on. When you floor it to kickdown, the front clutch is releasing but the kickdown band isn't applying right away so the rpm's flare up.

Adjust the kickdown band; if that doesn't help there is a problem with the band or the servo.

I've never opened up a transmission before, is this something I can do myself? And can someone walk me through it?

First pull the pan, take all the back row of bolts off then one side then the other( so all the fluid comes out the back and is easier to catch) then loosen the front row then remove the front row and hold the pan from falling.

Then you got to look for the front band apply lever. It will be located on the piston at the front of the trans. Grab the tip over the piston with two fingers and firmly pull it up and down, it should move about 1/8th inch.

Report back to us at that point before putting it back together or adjusting it.

No need to pull the pan to adjust the kickdown band, it's the external adjuster.

Loosen the 3/4" jam nut, back it off several turns, tighten the adjuster just snug with a short wrench, back the adjuster off two turns, hold the adjuster while tightening the jam nut.

If that doesn't cure the flareup the pan can then be removed for a look see.
