There is a large 971 stamp on the rear of the pan. what does that mean?

ok. I had heard that a 402 was stamped on the roadrunner pans, so I was curious if 971 meant anything special

Too bad the 440 source website is not the source for info anymore. They had a great deal of info for people with question like this.

402's where on B and E big blocks and hemi's 971 on b 400's 394 on 273-318-340 and 893 big block a body's.294 ,438,228 small , 971,695 699,854,933 big block b and c body and a 392 f-body.

simply a PN to fit on diff Bodies... thats specifically to 73-79 B bodies. ( maybe some other too )

Not the service number though! you'll find diff numbers on OEM parts catalogs to them. Normally one number above or below.

It does...kinda. The number stamped in the pan is one digit higher than the last three digits of the pan part number. The part number ror the "971" pan is 3614970.

All of that info is still available, just go to our main www.440source.com page, then click on the link which says "Informational pages" and you will still have access to all the original factory Chrysler part number tables and pictures on our site.

Here's what John means...NOS 2532402 oil pan with the 402 stamped.
Part number 2532401 inked on the pan...
