How to ID Solid or Hyd Roller Cam Without Teardown - 05/23/10 02:57 PM

Fellas -

Didn't get a whole lot of information on the 426 hemi in my Roadrunner when I bought the car, and really need to know whether the roller cam is hydraulic or solid. Is there a simple way to id this without pulling the cam out?

Thanks!

You can pull a valve cover and see how many rockers have loose lash-wiggle ability. THere should be more than half of them on base circle, so they should wiggle easy if a solid. You should be able to easily stick an .010" feeler gauge between rocker tip and valve stem on the loose ones. If you can't it may be a hyd. If you can spin the pushrods easily with your fingers, then you could crank one down a couple turns of adjuster, or until pushrod is hard to turn, walk away from the car for 1/2 hour or so, come back to it and if the rod then turns easily, it would most likely be a hyd cam.

or pull a rocker arm off and fish a lifter out with a magnet and inspect. Instant 100% certainty there.

Once a valve cover is off, you should be able to feel whether there's lash in the valvetrain or not. Hydraulic will have tension on all, solid will have some lash figured in.

Kinda hard to do with roller lifter with the tie bars & what not....

FWIW I've read that Hemis don't do hydraulic rollers well do to the extra height of the lifter body creating a severe angle on the pushrods..

Thanks, fellas. It's a solid roller.

Also found some paperwork when going thru my files; someone wrote down some part numbers of pieces/parts for the motor. Didn't find a cam part number but did find a part number for Comp solid roller lifters, so I think the case is closed on this one.

Thanks,

Scott
