Ive owned the truck since new
2004 Hemi Sport Quad Cab 4wd

Truck has 33,000 original miles - I do all my own oil changes , maintenance (My Dodge Dealer this past fall went thru the Rearend/Issues under warranty and then serviced the front axle and transfer case) - I guess this past winter , the salt on the roads really took its toll on the oil pan
I guess i just didnt notice it as much in the past

Anyways

The oil pan - I was speechless - I am not talking surface rust - I am talking serious bubbling corrosion in the area of the drain plug flat area - Looks like serious body rust in areas

All the years of wrenching i have never seen a oil pan rust like this on ANY vehicle

Whats this thing going to look like after a few more winters ???

Anyone get one of these replaced under warranty ??? Or would it bee a dead issue

I have the bumper to bumber 7 year 70,000 mile warranty i bought when new

I don't think warranty will cover it unless it is leaking. Least hassle for you at this point will be to get under there with a wire wheel, then shoot it with Rustoleum.

The oil pan rusted through on my old 95 Dakota, I wish I had addressed it sooner, would have been a lot less work/ cheaper.

It's really not that uncommon, especially on vehicles with exhaust pipes running under or close to the pan.

My 1992 F250's pan had to be replaced in 1996 due to rust through. The truck had under 40,000 miles and was otherwise in mint condition. Later learned it's very common with Fords from that era.

My '03 is like that too but mine has 229,000 miles on it, so actually it's probably worse.

It's really ugly but it probably won't leak for many years after the bubbling starts because the pans are actually laminated/made from "quiet steel".......a layer of nasty plastic goop sandwiched between two layers of steel. So you're only seeing the outside of it....the inside layer is probably still in perfect shape.

The nasty plastic goop stuff (also known as engineered multilayer composites with various viscoelastic cores) tends to protect the inner layer pretty darn well. The outer layer can be pretty trashed and it won't leak.

Yep , thats what i expected when i called the dealer today - And thats exactly the answer i got

Didnt make a big issue out of it

Picked up some Rustoleum Stop Rust Paint Converter

Will bee under there this weekend cleaning it up
