Dumb question, freeze plug install - 08/08/08 04:11 PM

Hey all,

Got a quick, but dumb question on installing freeze plugs. I should know this but I'm not sure. Do I have to put any kind of sealer on them before I drive em in? I'm using brass ones in my 23k mile RV 360 thats going into my '81 D-250

I never have. Driving them in would push any sealer out anyway.

I use Permatex #1 hardening formula. It is about the only application I have for Permatex #1.

The last factory recommendation I saw (1998) was to use red Loctite on the plugs. Myself, I always use Permatex Super 300 and haven't had a problem in 40 years. I don't mean to be picky but the plugs are slightly tapered and will trap a sealant when you drive them in.

If you put them in dry it's a roll of the dice. Some leak some don't. Some of mine are still fine, but I had to replace a couple when the weather got down in the freezing range.

I know a guy who had a shop rebuild a 340 T/A engine and the one and only plug that leaked was the one in the back of the head after it was in the car.
