NEED PAINTERS HELP - 05/11/10 03:19 AM

i am getting ready to spray the exterior on my 68'dodge r/t, the question is, i have painted the door jambs, under the hood and in the trunk, my question is, how do i tape off these areas when i paint the rest of the car? i know if i tape it off can cause a seam,

I do my cars the same way. I just tape mine off as best I can and after the outside paint is cured I use a bent razor blade to take off the hi area of the seam then wet sand it and hand buff it. it sucks doing it this way but I like single stage paint on trunk, jambs, inside of doors and under hood not as shiny. I like 2 stage paint outside super shiney. go to this site they are all paint and body guys they might have a better answer for you http://www.autobody101.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=5

Depends on if your using metallic or solid colors. As far as I know you can't wet sand single stage metallic without pretty much ruining it. At least I've never seen anybody get away with it. Solid colors you can wet sand and repair quite easily. If you look at it closely and take your time you will see there are points where the panels overlap or join for the inner fenders, trunk opening and door jambs that's where I taped mine off. It's a pain but it can be done.

When you say you just shot base under the hood are you saying you shot basecoat without clear? if yes you can't do that you have to put some type of clear over it ( glossy or matte finish) or the basecoat will fail. if you are saying you put single stage paint on it you will be OK

2 choices here:

Tape it opposite of what you normally would do, paper toward the outside of the vehicle and then roll the paper backwards to create a soft edge. You are creating a little pocket between the paper and tape that paint can get it without being a sharp line.

Or you can spend the big bucks and get the 3M DART tape. It's basically a tape with the built in soft edge and will allow you to tape the jambs without leaving a sharp line.

Also as a side note base won't stand up for long without clear, and will most definitely fade with no UV protection.

i use this product every day at work. the only problem you might have with it is if you spray a different color sealer before base coating you will see a sealer line in the jamb. 3M also makes a special tape to stop this. i will check with my paint supplier to get the proper name and number for it, i order it by anti sealer line tape from my paint supplier.

Re: NEED PAINTERS HELP - 05/12/10 04:31 AM

yes, plum crazy on 68, my dad had a 70road runner with this color, i always loved it, i am building the car for me, it was a green, 318/904
it is now a plum crazy, 440/727, 3.55 sure grip , every thing r/t , it is cheaper to build what you want than to try to find a numbers matching r/t and pay 75,000.00 , i built my r/t for about 25000.00

Re: NEED PAINTERS HELP - 05/12/10 04:34 AM

i talked with my paint guy today, he was telling me the 3m tape will work for me, he say if i am not use to doing the other tape thing, maybe easier for me to buy the tape, so i guess i will spend the money, thanks for all the input, i will post a pic once i get the paint on
