Anyone have the recipe for decent power out of a 383 - 08/06/08 05:23 PM

OK,

I have a 383 in my 74 Road Runner
It was rebuilt back in 95 or so, and has VERY few miles on it
(less than 6000) It was built with "flat top" pistons, stock
"smog" heads, a Mopar "Purple" .509 lift cam, and a Performer
RPM intake, and Performer carb..
It's got a 4 speed and 3.91s and it needs more get up and go..

I should have about $3000 or so to dump into it.

I can pick up a running used 440 with transmission for $600
but would have to have it rebuilt I would think, so that would take
a fair chunk of the money.

I was looking at Edelbrocks power package
but that shows 417 HP, 421 ft/lbs TQ
and cost $2275 but I have not found any dyno graphs
and I would think for that price I could make more.

This is just a street car, so low end grunt is more important
than power at 7500rpms

Anyone have any 383 combos?

I run the 509 cam in my 383 myself.Having said that,I would change the cam out for either a 484mp(if you just have to stay Mopar)or something off the shelf from Comp Cams. The 509 is a bit of a dog on the low end esp. with that gear.Hope this helps!

I think you will find that the compression ratio is sorely lacking any decent numbers. Did you 'cc the heads? My guess is that they have about a 90cc colume. You'll find the psitons are probably a good distance in the hole too, leading to about an 8.8:1 ratio. You need to raise your compression ratio to wake up the motor. That is my

Someone has suggested the "Stealth" heads from 440-source (listed at 84cc) and a XE274 cam..

I am also going to put a 800CFM annular discharge Mighty Demon carb on it.. I don't like that Edelbrock that's on it at all

Thoughts?

Some good info there..
I tried searching 383, but I guess it was not enough as it would not let me, and if I google anything with 383 I get SBC stuff

A 383 makes power just like any other engine; compression, head flow and ring seal. Get those things working correctly and you'll make plenty of power.
