Block off vacuum advance nipple on distributor? - 05/02/10 04:43 PM
Since i have my distributor locked out at 36 degrees total timing and it runs great there can I just block off the vacuum advance nipple by putting a nipple plug on it?
I am running a Huges solid cam 579/582 258/260. I have power brakes.

Yep, or you can leave it open. Not much vacumn to lose in a distributor.

no need to cap it at that end, there is no vac at the distributor without the tube being connected to the carb. Cap it at the carb nipple.

36 degrees total is right in the ball park, but what initial are you running? Have you tried limiting the total mechanical advance so you can run more initial timing and still have 36 total?
Does the car gas knock when you have the vacuum advance hooked up at this timing? What is the total timing advance when the vacuum advance is fully advanced? Have you adjusted the allen head inside the vacuum canister before deciding to run without it? It can give you a little better mileage on the road when it's hooked up and dialed in, but it takes some tuning to get it where it won't affect your initial acceleration and octane sensitivity.
You can also remove the vacuum pod entirely and cover the hole in the side of the distributor with a small metal plate.

Block it off to keep tiny critters from building a home in there plus the diaphram will last longer should you decide to go back to vacuum advance. After all how much does a packet of plugs cost?
