Carb and Torque converter choices? can you help?

Carb and Torque converter choices? can you help? - 04/30/10 05:27 PM

Can anyone recommend a decent carb and converter that's not to pricey for a 400 Chrysler engine? I unfortunately have no cam card on this particular engine, but was told by the previous owner it was a "purple cam" (seems those words are used loosely in this hobby and doesn't really help me to ID it) I do know that the cam is lumpy and the engine is mildly built in my opinion. I am wanting around a 3200-3500 stall without spending a ton of money. The car will not be raced, just an average street car. What converter and carb (around 600-650 cfm) would you recommend to me priced reasonably?..Thanks Moparts Members!

Why do you think you need anything but a stock converter for that set up on the street? If anything a 2500-2800 wouls be plenty enough stall for you. The edelbrock series carbs are good.

I was told that is what I needed because with my car in "park" and at idle the car runs great! idles fine and sounds good. When I put it in "drive" the idle goes way down, runs real choppy/crappy and wants to stall out on me in the driveway, at stoplights, stop signs, etc..... I also have to keep my foot on the brake real hard while at stoplights to keep the car from wanting to lunge forward (more like "surge" forward) It runs great going down the road but really starts to act up at standstill while in gear. So, based on that I was told a 3000-3200 stall converter will/should fix that issue for me. I also know my carb is not running exactly right. So I wanted to replace that also. Any advice appreciated.

You don't need a converter you need to get the engine running right. I'm running a 10.5:1 408 stroker with a 508 cam and a stock converter and have none of those problems. Have you tried adjusting the carb and checking the timing etc? You may have a bad distributor.

My mechanic runs an engine machine shop, he's been heavy into mopars since the 60's and has a couple of his own. Had him adjust the carb and set the timing last week. They were way off, helped some but not nearly enough to keep this running right. Anything I can do now to check the dist.?

I'm runnibg a 498 stroker and have a 22 to 2800 stahl. Car wouldn't idle when placed in park..would jump/stahl.Converter lets the tranny slip a bit at idle now.
A bad distributor would not run well in drive or at highway speed. The timing would most likely jump. Sounds like converter.

A distributor could drive just fine once you got going. The advance could be hanging up. I would try disconnecting the vacuum advance and plugging the vacuum line and see how it runs.

Always check the simple things first, but it very well could be the converter. A tight stock converter could load the engine too hard at idle for a cammed motor, especially if it idles fine in neutral/park.

Most "purple" cams do need a higher stall converter, especially in the 400 and the driveability will get better. If that thing is still loaded with stock converter, it will most likely be extra doggy out of the hole.
