KD linkage is correct?

Re: 3rd shift - 04/30/10 05:21 AM

I've had a few automatics over the years that took awhile to shift into 3rd gear. The 904 in my 67 Dart shifts great, but when it is cold and warming up, it takes longer to upshift and the road speed is higher. Once it is up to temp, it shifts normally.

I double checked the linkage and after hours of driving it still doesn't shift..

could the shifter linkage be off?
did you see if you have another space to move it, like between neutral and drive?

Re: 3rd shift - 04/30/10 03:00 PM

I have the same issue with a fresh 1965 727. It takes forever to shift into 3rd when cold. Once up to 30mph or so, I can shift to neutral and back to drive and it goes right into 3rd. The problem is not as bad when the trans warms up. Had the pan off to assure that the shift linkage was perfectly adjusted and the kickdown is a new Bouchillon adjusted properly. I am leaning toward a valve body issue.

Re: 3rd shift - 04/30/10 03:59 PM

So it has 1st 2nd then stays in second no matter where the shifter???

Could be valve body I once but a ball in the wrong spot and it had 1st 2nd and still second but that was a manual VB>

No seriously, if your shifter is off, you could be in 2nd not D. So you never go into third.
Now if it goes into third after it is warmed up, then I don't know what I am talking about.

Re: 3rd shift - 04/30/10 05:39 PM

First thing to do is disconnect the throttle pressure linkage at the transmission lever and allow the lever to go full forward, if it will shift to 3rd with the linkage off the linkage is the problem. If it still won't shift the problem is internal.

Drop the pan and make sure the valve body bolts are tight. Then check the band adjustment while you are in there...

As mentioned earlier, if the large check ball is left out of the valve body there will be no 2-3 shift.

Re: 3rd shift - 05/01/10 09:26 PM

Where can I get a diagram of the body and location of the famous checkball ??

Re: 3rd shift - 05/02/10 06:49 AM

this shows the big ball in a manual but I think there are less balls in a auto VB but the big ball goes the same place.

Re: 3rd shift - 05/02/10 09:58 PM

Re: 3rd shift - 05/02/10 11:32 PM

The large ball is in location #6 in the pic below, of the balls that sit in bathtub shaped pockets in the casting, #6 is in the only large bathtub.

Re: 3rd shift - 05/03/10 10:04 PM

I'd give it to the shop that built it.

The only other thing I can think to do is hook up a test gauge to the governor pressure test port and check the pressure on the road; there should be about 10 psi for every 10 mph.

Re: 3rd shift - 05/06/10 08:45 PM

And the answer is ..........

A non lock-up valve body, simply doesn't work in
a later lock-up transmission
