Typically, for a 8" wheel, a squared up backspace would be about 4-3/4" (factory steel 7" wheels are @ 4-1/4") A 70 should have no problem fitting just about anything that will fit on a wheel in that neighborhood.

Why not take the wheels out to 10 inch? I fit 18x10 rims in my 70 Charger without cutting anything. They have 4 3/4 inch backspacing.

Mickey Thompson makes Sportsman SR street radials in 28 x 12 x 15.
Hoosier makes Pro Street radials in 29 x 12.50 x 15.
Both tires fit 10" wheels nicely.

You might be able to find someone in the local area who has a tape measure who could help you measure the wheel wells. That is the best way to figure out how wide the wheels can be and where they should be centered.

The only problem with wheel vintiques is, they are really heavy

Heavy? So what? The mopar engines make plenty of torque anyway.
The Heavier wheels wont make that much difference in acceleration, but they will allow a factory appearance and they are strong.
