need wiring diagram for relocating battery to trunk - 04/28/10 03:43 PM

I am relocating my battery to the trunk and installing master cut off switch, I have a 4 pole disconnect switch(has 2- small terminals, 2- large terminals) the alternator is mopar with 2 field terminals( 1- blue wire going to it, 1- green wire going to it) and the BAT terminal, anyone know how this should be wired up or have a diagram to show this for my application, need car engine to shut off when switch is turned off

Depends on how you want it to work. Just the basic pass tech or a safer manner?

This is the method I prefer. Keeps that fat wire line to the starter cold except when starting the car. Put the ford solenoid in the trunk right next to the battery

On your 4 pole switch wire the alt like the one healtservices posted above, not like the one in my example.

Make darn sure the cut off switch can handle the anticipated amp load.

I HATE, yes HATE, to see cars that have that hot line from the alt to battery live all the time. If you've never seen a car burn to the ground because of it, it's a real joy.

If you do put the relay in the alt line like I have, the way this one is wired is for a race car that the switch is turned off after every run. The relay will be a continuous draw when the master cut off is left on. If a street car, connect the trigger terminal to a switched key source instead of the downstream side of the master cutoff.

If your 4 prong switch cannot handle the load you can just wire it like this as well.

Actually I would have the wire from the battery disconnect go directly to the starter.

Personal preference here.

I want the 6-8 ga wire carrying the load vs that 1-2 ga or larger, huge line running to the starter. If each got grounded which carries the greater potential for damage?

Yes my cars carry a bit more wire, but, you throw the cutoff switch and nothing outside about a 1.5-2 ft cube in trunk is hot anywhere in the car.

I like your version a lot and have it in my files. I may still change mine over but because the system is already wired on my car and I have other items I'm still working on it's on the back burner.

I would put a continuous duty solenoid for the alternator though.

The haters will be in soon to talk about how the relay isn't needed, adds cost/weight, prone to failure.

I carry a jumper so if the relay were to fail at the track, I can jump around the relay and be no worse than the constant hot alt line method. If you get tricky, you can use a weather-pak. Also, I usually have a spare relay with me so it can be changed if necessary. Knock on wood, I've never had a S605 fail yet.

Here is a version similar to your diagram that uses the four prong switch for the alternator. No draw if master left on and no live wires leaving trunk with the master off. Motor dies if switch flipped

Some of the issues are solved if the master disconnect is on the negative side of the batt rather than the hot side. But the NHRA rules makers haven't ever seen the light. However, if you aren't racing at a NHRA track then putting the switch on the negative side might work better.

The only problem I see with a negative switch would be to able to isolate the alternator so it will shut off the motor if the master was to be flipped.

And to the OP you would just cut the original wire from the Alternator to the Bulkhead. The Ameter will no longer work.

Any wiring diagrams that show the mopar alt with 2 field connections instead of just a 1 wire alt, I want to keep the original style alt that I have and it has 1-BAT terminal, 2-FIELD terminals

Should still work without back feeding, leave the two field terminal as they are routed and route the 1-bat as described in one of the diagrams, but disconnect from bulkhead.

Otherwise if you have a MSD it's just a matter of rerouting the small red wire to the secondary terminal on the master switch, rather than use the alt wire.

Here is a diagram that should work with a MSD. Note the small red wire on the MSD is only a trigger wire so voltage lost across the long line is not important.

bumping a old thread - how would you guys add in the denso toyota altenators that alot of guys are running instead of the oem single wire?
