What gears do I have? - 04/28/10 03:37 AM
Is there a way to determine the gear ratio of a rear-end without pulling the carrier? I have a stock 8 3/4 in my '74 Challenger. I understand ther could be several different gears but I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Need to see if I'm going to have to re-gear for the cam I want to use. I thought you could turn the yoke and count how many times it takes to turn the tire once, but does that work for a non-suregrip?

For a non sure grip multiply the rotation of drive shaft by 2
Make sure one tire is not spinning, chocked or on the ground

Jack 1 tire just off the ground, in neutral, put valve stem @12 O'clock, turn wheel back to 12 O'clock twice (2 revolutions) and count the driveshaft revolutions. 3&1/2 is 3:55, 3:23 is 3&1/4, 3:91 is slightly less than 4 turns and 4:10 is slightly over 4 turns and 4&1/2 turns is 4:56
