How to test a 3prong neutral safety switch? - 04/28/10 01:24 AM

How do I test my NSS to determine if it is bad?

My harness is good.
I hot wire NSS ground terminal on starter relay to ground and car starts.

THanks,
Mark

Take a VoltOhm meter, when you press the switch terminals 1 & 3 and should read continuity, these are for the reverse lites. Next for the neutral safety switch, press the switch and check for continuity from terminal 2 to the outside of the switch(ground).

Quickly, it's sometimes not all the way in park, try it in neutral.

I have to have the switch out of the transmission to do this test? I'm guessing when you say press the switch, there is something to press on the backside?
If so is there a test I can do before taking it out?
Thanks!

Correct..
You can do the same tests with the switch installed, but instead of pressing the switch put the shift linkage in the respective position.
As inside the transmission is a lever which activates/presses the switch for each position of reverse and neutral/park. Pull off the wire connector carefully.

Ok I did try it in the transmission.
Both in Park and Neutral. I do not get any continuity either 1&3 or 2 and ground. I guess that means the switch is bad.
Thanks

Did you check for the Reverse pins 1 & 3..
If yes but still no continuity..
It mite also mean you have an issue with the shift linkage or with the internal arm lever inside the transmission.

Then next you should pull the switch and check, or swap it out as new switches are < $10. But check the new switch before installing as I mentioned and you will understand How it works..
