1966 440 engine - 04/27/10 03:17 AM

WHat heads probably came on a 66 year model 440 in a dodge polara station wagon? And the Horse power rating? Any info appreciated. will this be a true 10:1 engine? Worried about the ping.

516 heads, which are closed chambered but dont flow as well as any of the heads that came after it (915,906,346,452,902) 350 horsepower, its rated at 10.1:1 but more likely 9.5:1. It will ping at a point on 93 but you shouldnt have serious problems with detonation and should be able to run enough timing to make good power.

it wont have quench & prob some carbon buildup but we can work around the ping if it does. that's alot of $$$ I'm assuming it runs but is not driveable?. Does it have a sure grip? if so grab it, if not.... what else are you going to use off of it? I'd probably get it.

The engine and the transmission. I figured the rear end chunk as well and driveshaft. I'm going to offer them $450 brecause it's just been sitting and has not been driven and had a fender bender years ago in the front. Here is a pic

Put a battery in it or hand turn it w a breaker bar to at least see if the eng isn't locked up. I'd ask to meet him to take a look at the title and whip out 300 cash out of your pocket (in tens as that makes the pile look larger) and go from there. With the economy plus it not being running you are in a very good bargaining position. When he signes the title/plus a signed/dated sales receipt you've clinched it.

$300 I will do.The motor is not locked according to her dad. I'm just wondering do I want to build a 318 or go BB in my 66 BelvedereII. Advice? I have a 70 Satellite with a BB already. And I have 2 318's in the yard and 3 904 trannys.

318s are ok but will never make torque like a 440. When you drive a 318 car that can pull off mid 14s its cool, but a stock HP 440 will do the same thing and the torque that the 440 makes just really makes the car a pleasure to drive, even with highway gears.

Its a very straight forward swap in a B body. The 440 out of that car will go right in with a big block 727. You wont need anything other than motor mounts if you want to replace them. It will require some exhaust modification, obviously, but really thats about it. Apparently you have to modify the hot wire to the coil to be longer, but I didn't have to in my Satellite.

It required more work to switch my car to the 727, as I needed a new throttle pressure linkage and shift linkage. You wont need a new shift linkage though since your car has a 727 already and the throttle pressure linkage in that Dodge should work in your car I believe, might have to double check on that though.

My thinking is on occaision I want to drive the 318 for the economy and if the BB is down for reworking so if you do not have a running economy vehicle plus the fact that you have 318/904's collecting dust BUT that Belvedere would do better w a BB and I imagine you have another running vehicle other than the satellite or buy it and it'll for sure have alot of good pieces and build/stroke it . Good luck on it. Just make sure it isn't locked (you can check it yourself wo offending them, do your best bargaining and #1 get the title/receipt in hand and you can retrieve the car later.

Yeah I did the swap before in my 70 Satellie. It was a 318 car and I put a 440 out of a 70 New Yorker in it. Since then have had it rebuilt and it's a BLAST to drive. I just hate I have these xtra engines in the yard and SB trannys

If you have access to some A body rollers you could drop the 318's in & create some runners to sell. I understand the Southern heat kills eng's but bodies survive pretty good down there. People up here are are always looking for dependable daily drivers in the $800-2K range.
