Please school me on carb jets

I'm rebuilding AVS that came from a 71 C-body BB. Its going on my '74 318, stock except a 340 like cam (haven't picked it yet) and dual exhaust. I was just going to simply rebuild it but when I was taking the jets out, I boogered one up ('cuz I didn't used the proper sized screwdriver My question(s) is(are) when you install bigger jets, do you also replace the metering rods? Do they come as a set? What size is stock. I can't find anything on line that tells me. Do I want stock or do I want bigger/smaller?? The car will be a weekend/sometimes daily street driver with and occasional "light to light exposition" IOW Not a race car. Just a fun car! Also, who has them? No one seems to supply old carter carb stuff in Omaha anymore, and most of the kids that work at the parts houses when they were job hunting, seem to have had to choose whether they wanted to ask, "what year did you say that was?" or, "do you want fries with that?" Hi Scott. ID the other pri jet to find out what you have and get an eddy strip kit for a performer carb that has rods/jets close to what you have and sub in a pair of eddy 2 step rods and this requires eddy jets also and fill the metering rod caps w epoxy to make them flat or I have an AFB w factory 3 step rods/jets (motorhome app I think) that you can have for $49 if you hurry. All oe AVS carbs were emission calibrated and can benefit from re jetting in the main metering (rods/jets) system and maybe elsewhere too.

Thanks, Robert. So, I want to keep the carb fairly stock right? Is that because of the fact that this particular carb (MO 4966S) is originally designed for a big block and I'm putting it on a mildly modified small block? What does bigger jets do for a carburetor? Whats the difference between 2 step and 3 step rods. And will the Eddy parts fit the carter? Sorry for all the "dumb" questions but carburetor science has always been a mystery to me. I can muddle my way through about any rebuild but altering performance factors is my weak suite.

Scott those are legitimate Q's. To keep it simple you need another jet the same as the one that got marred or a pair of em that are slightly larger. AVS strip kits are almost non existent so a parts carb is what is needed or convert to eddy 2 step rods/jets and the flat caps but my carb would be the simplest/cheapest way to go to get you up and running. EDIT just opened mine up and the pri jets are 120-252. The rods have a # of 16-404. .063 "cruise" .051" "power". "intermediate" step .061"
