Gas Boiling issue I think !!! 383 - 04/24/10 11:52 AM

Newly rebuilt 383, TTI headers, RPM Performer intake, EDL AVS carb, Engine was rebuilt with a Fel-Pro master set, so I am wondering if the valley pan with the kit didn't have a blocked heat crossover and that might be the cause of the fuel boiling??

Could be a lot of things. 1.How far are the headers from your mechanical fuel pump? 2.Do you have a carb spacer? 3.Did you fill up the tank before the summer blend was available? 4.What's your fuel pressure? 5.Is your tank vented?
I found that the gas started boiling at my mech. fuel pump because of the header. I used an infared temp gun from Autozone for about 29.00 bucks. Just some thoughts.

what kind of fuel line do you have?? I had the same problem with my 1969 383hp (all stock)... blocking the crossover and putting a braided fuel line and a AM fuel filter really helped....

Eddys seem to have problems with this, they get heat soaked easy, i would run a small phonolic or wood spacer, but another area could be in the heat cross-over causeing this, i've noticed on my car, when the intake gets hot, even alittle hot too the touch, the carb is still damn near cold, its a holley with just the paper gasket, but it doesn't have the heat cross-over.

I think the biggest problem with the cross-over is not so much that the intake gets hot, its more of a "stove" or kettle affect on the carb, the heat transfering through heats the floor of the intake to vaporize the fuel, but in the proccess its heating up the carb as well, this wasn't such a major issue with cast-iron intakes, but the factory also had a heat pad between the intake/valley pan for this reason.

I just pulled the intake and ordered the fel-pro #1214 set to block the heat crossover, and will also use a thicker carb base gasket. If I still have issues I will be back on with a new post. Thanks to all for their responses!!

Look to see if your fuel line runs close to the exhaust anywhere too. Mine did so I put a shield in and added a phenolic spacer.
