FIRST ... is there a "fix" for this? And in what specific years was this a major problem? What did Chrysler do to "correct" this manufacturing defect?

I bought a repair kit thru napa that is basically a steel cap that covers the tower, and includes rivets. I plan to remove the wiper bucket, weld the cap on, toss the rivet in the tool box and under coat the strut tower. The repair kit was like $30.
why did it happen?.....well I'm sure that will be sorted out over the next 20 posts

... but what do you do ... if the whole TOP of the tower is rusted away ?

This cap covers the whole top and wraps down approx 3" over the tower, and back into the firewall. If thats not enough then you need some major serjury. I really can't help you more than that.....your avatar is already going to give me nightmares, good luck, I'm out.

if i remember correctly. when talking to the chrysler body techs, they were GLUEING the cap to the shock tower and then installing special rivets to help hold everything together.

My neighbor was a Mopar tech and said that Mopar used two pieces of metal glued or pressed together to make that area. Since both pieces were raw they rust out...Mopar had a kit to repair these as well from the inside but they have to take apart the front end to do it..
Dont know if they do it any differently now..

My 98 Voyager has the same problem but not real bad yet, i greased the crap out of that area to try and keep it from getting worse....

So both Chrysler and Napa offer this kit ? .. the Mopar one requires you to pull the struts ...and the Napa one just has you slip-it-over the existing towers?
I have seen a couple of these at auctions and JY's ..... W O W ... one that stands out in my mind was at an auction ... the seller BONDOed over the rust(rot) area and spray-bombed it.

you need a dorman/oes # 924-206. most any parts store should be able to order it for you. $19.00 from my store.

I've done a bunch of them. Remove the battery,wiper trans,upper strut nuts. Jack up vehicle so struts drop down. Knock the rust away with hammer,air chisel off loose pieces. I weld the repair piece all around the center opening. I drill the rivet holes to 1/2" and plug weld thru them. The real rusty ones may require a additional patch to be fabbed. Undercoat from inside the strut tower area and reasssemble. Even if part of the center tower area is rusted and missing it'll work.

Its an adobe file. Contains part numbers and labor times per the TSB.
