2.94s vs 3.55s vs 4.10s - 04/17/10 08:09 AM

Right now I have 2.94s in my Satellite. Its a stock 350 horse 440, runs good, headers and a Holley 770 carb. I'm going to change the cam to something mild, probably the bigger Summit cam, in a few weeks and put an Eddy RPM on it. Right now the car has 2.94 gears and well, it feels like it has 2.94 gears in it.

I have a 2.94 sure grip, 741 case and a buddy has a 3.55 open 741 case. I can buy the 3.55 open from him and swap my sure grip to the 3.55 and have 3.55 gears but I'm debating weather or not to just put 4.10s in it. The tires will be 28 inches tall. Im a strong believer in what the factory engineers do and the quickest street car Mopar ever put together is an A12 car and they ALL came with 4.10s. I dont go faster than 60 on the highway anyway and usually like to take the Satellite the long way everyplace.

How do you guys feel about 3.55s vs 4.10s? Does it pull much harder?

Most performance package cars I thought came with 3.91's. All things being equal I'd pick the 4.10's. If I were given 3.55's I'd go with them vs. paying to install 4.10's the gain isn't worth it.

I second the 3.55's, good all around gear. I went from 2.96's to 3.55's and liked it.

Do you have a 727 or 833? If it's a 727 and you plan on running a small hyd cam I would go with 3.55's, if it's a 833 I would run 4.10's and get a small solid like a MP284/.528.

I don't think the summit cam is large enough to run with 4.10's and a 440, I have a similar cam in my 318 with 4.10's and it seems like a good match.

4.10's for the kick in the pants feel, if you never go over 60mph its worth it. Even if you did get on the E way you wont even be turning 3000 RPM. My personal choice would be 3.91's, my dads 68 R/T with a stock 440 Mag loved the 3.91 compared to its orig 3.23's.

Sorry to off topic this post, but wow the Red Duster in the above post takes me back to my high school days. I had a Yellow with black stripe 74 Duster 360. I had the same molded hood scoop and all. Ok, sorry for the interruption, it was just one of those flashbacks.

Be honest with yourself- If you are not gonna do alot of highway driving then go with the 4:10s. I had 29" tall tires with 4:10s and when I would get on the highway I was always bumping the B&M shifter thinking was in second when I was already in 3rd. Your 440 if it is a true 350 horse version is a torque freak and the 3:55s are a nice all around gear!

Go with the 3.55, your gonna love it on the highway. With the 4.10 over time your going to realize you cant go for that ride at 70-75 mph and see that tach screaming!

Even 3.55's aren't great on the highway. 65mph is basically 3000rpm with a 28" tire. 4.10's will spin even higher. You can play with this calculator:

If you do an overdrive trans or zero highway driving, 4.10's are great.

Given THOSE choices...3.55 no brainer. Now based on your description of the use of the car, if you could get a set of 3.73 or 3.91's then there would be a little harder decision to make...

I would say 355 max. I ran 323's on a 67 satellite, 440, 474 cam, headers and ran 13.40's at strip.

3.23-3.55 gears are great with a 4 speed 440. Let the 440 3.75 stroke pull you ahead with a large, lasting, broad piston flamefront.

Peronally using 3.23's in my 4spd cuda, In my 4 door 4 spd valiant too.

The factory 440 peaked out before 5k rpm , no sense in going with a 4.10. If you had a cammed 318 and wanted to zip around, have your way with the 4.10s.

I hated 3.55's on the highway. with 27" tall tires it's 3300 RPM at freeway speeds (70-75 in MI)

I've got an A12 Bee with 4.10s, 833 and large summit cam(defunct General Kinetics, Camshaft merchandisers "P" series grind)

. Great for laying rubber , but stinks on the highway. It sucks having KIAs and Hondas zinging by at 70-75 while the Bee screams along at 55. Been thinkin of changing out the dana for a 8 3/4 with 3.23s

i love the 3;55 gear. Mine's a 440 auto 28.5 tire. No problem running 70 80 on the highway and no Kia or Civic is gonna blow your doors off. Had 3:91's in a 4 speed car that was also excellent.

3.55's, stick or auto, works well. If you want to be ultra conservative, 3.23's aren't too bad. It
is all about where and how you drive!!

Re: 2.94s vs 3.55s vs 4.10s - 04/18/10 04:03 PM

If I made a small step change from 3.23 to 3.55 and GOT PLENTY HAPPY I can guess a bigger change up to 3.55 will get more happiness.

I could get 100-110 miles on little bit less than 4K RPMs ( in D ). 27" tires.

but for all around use I woulnd't go higher than 3.55
