8&3/4 end play problem - 04/17/10 02:00 AM

SBP 8&3/4 going together and I cant get one axle in all the way, lacking ~1/4 or so. (open chunk). w the chunk out & it mocked up w the backing plates on (& no foam or steel shims) and the axles in I have exactly 1&9/32" between the splined ends but even them I have to pound the axles in which I am not comfortable with. pull apart/add chunk/reassemble axles/b plates I have the ~1/4 I cant get in. The housing is 52&5/8" and it feels like I'm hitting solid metal. Thank you for your time.

No michael I for some reason forgot all about adjusting the adjuster till I got inside but with that much left to go sumpin ain't kosher plus the bearings are just too tight going in

Something is out of alignment. Years ago we tried putting a welded spider diff. in a derby car. Ran into the same prob., used a bfh to get the axle in than had to use a puller to get the axle out. In our case the prob. was the weld shifted the side gear and the splines bound on the axle.

Did you change the seals?I had a similar situation on my 70 challenger axle would not go all the way in I scratched my head awhile on that one.One seal was not quite all the way in and this made my axle feel funny trying to go in.Just a thought.

I drove one seal in and had the prob and I whacked it again and it felt like that it was in all the way. The axle is seated (you can feel the ring of the metal when you hit it but it wont go in) and all of the bearing is not into the housing

the thrust spacer in an 8-3/4 is 1-1/2" wide so 1-1/2 minus 1-9/32 would give you 7/32"(or nearly the 1/4" that you are having trouble with.)

The housing does measure 52&5/8" and these are stock SBP axles and I can see the flats of the spacer assy in the center of the open chunk. Any more thoughts?

maybe you don't have one of the inner axle seals in far enough and it it stopping the axle

The seals have to be driven all the way in to the stop lip in the housing. They can't be driven in too far because of this lip that is machined into the housing as a stop but they have to be in this far.
