1989 360 high stall torque converter - 04/15/10 10:37 PM

Here's my set up 1985 ramcharger with a '89 360 LA motor running a voodoo 60711 cam 727 trans with an 8.25 ring gear and 294 ration, summit headers - wanna use a high stall stock torque converter but I done know what vehicles came with a stock high stall Torque converter. Any suggestions or help period would be greatly appreciated.

I will not try to preach, but with such a freeway oriented gear ratio, do you really want a high stall converter? If so... Truck 318 engines may have a higher stall than the 360...The smaller engine needs to spin a little more since it has less torque. The factory 383 HP and 340 engines had the highest stall speeds, but they are getting scarce. A new one may be the easiest route to take. A good trans or converter shop will be able to weld the required balance weight on the converter. Otherwise, you could use the B&M flexplate for a 360.

The thing being is that the unit in question will very likely have a lock up and the converter s mentioned will most likely be non lockup.
Also stall speeds vary with a converter. One that will stall at 1500 behind a 318 may well stall at 2000 behind a 383 01700 behind a torky 360.

For sure the 79 300's and Magnums came with "Hi Stall" convertors. They were rated by Chrysler @ 2200 to 2400 rpm behind the E58 360 motor.

To be perfectaly honest I dont know anything bout torque converters i was told by another moparts member that a high stall converter would be best as im building this set up for a daily driver BUT I want some torque and power also in the future im looking to goto 3.55 gears.

I get you. The 2.94 gears with a standard 31 inch truck tire will make the truck a little lazy off the line. The less torque the engine has, the more stall it needs. A slant six will need more stall speed in a truck than a 440. Another guideline: Lower gears( 3,91, 4.10 ) can get by with higher stall since they get the engine up to speed quicker. A tall tire, tall gears and high stall speed will create much more heat in the transmission and make your truck a real slug out of the hole.

local tranz shop

ask for a stock high stall TC (loc up or non lock depending on your tranz)

want it balanced for a 360

around 120$ at my tranz shop

gear swap is in the future IIRC

E58 cop engine for specs if they ask
