70 GTX won't start after conversion

70 GTX won't start after conversion - 04/15/10 08:13 PM

After 2 days of trying to sort out a ton of bad wiring under the dash and installing a new M&H electronic ignition wiring harness the GTX won't start. I know there are no issues with the engine wiring harness and the control module, ballast resister, and coil are new but it appears there is no spark from the coil. The distributor was changed to a Mallory unilite from the old points distributor. I had to put a mopar 2 prong connector on it for the wiring harness to plug in and the third wire from the unilite was grounded to the block. I did have to replace the wires under the dash that run from the bulkhead to the ammeter. The dash is out but I have hooked all the power wires together. Can anyone give me some suggestions on where to look and tell me what I can check with a meter? Thanks, Todd

Yes, it cranks over fine. The coil is the same one that was in the car that was running the points distributor. The mallory unilite distributor that I put in the car for the conversion came with the car in a box and is used but nice looking. I have not heard a motor run with this distributor. Is there a way to test a Unilite distributor to see if it's good?

Ok, after a little research it appears you cannot use a unilite distributor with a mopar ecu box because it uses its own control module with a opto pick-up and not a magnetic pick-up. So I guess my two options are to modify the new wiring harness (I don't want to do this to a new engine harness) or use a different distributor with a magnetic pick-up. Does this info sound accurate? Can anyone recommend a good distributor that uses a magnetic pick-up for a performance engine? Thanks, Todd

The MP (Mallory) ones, the easily adjustable mech adv feature is nice. No opinion on their quality (havent seen/used one). Might see what FBO has to offer

It's fixed and running good. I just by passed the ECU and wired the Unilite with 12 volts like they reccomend. Thanks
